When I inserted the Win 10 media tool dvd, I played it, therefore creating a clean upgrade not a clean install.

If I had booted off the dvd instead would it have been different so i could have created a clean installation instead?

I was confusing playing a movie video with installing a program or an iso file or a media tool.

Does this sound right and is the iso file better than the media tool or the same?

    Any corrections appreciated.

In order to get a clean install of Win 10 you must first upgrade your qualifying Win 7 or 8/8.1 system. Once that has been done, and you can see it has been activated, you can boot from the DVD created with the media creation tool and perform a clean install. If you attempt to install 10 from the DVD without first going through the upgrade process you get asked for a key, which you do not have, so that route is no good at all.

I initially upgraded a couple of systems, a Win 7 and a Win 8.1, but had issues with both and rolled them back. I then tried again with the 8.1 and followed the upgrade with a clean install and that is good, no issues at all that I can detect, and fast too. It's time consuming as you've got to reinstall all your software and get everything configured the way you want it, but it's well worth the effort in my opinion.

While I've got you, and as you have 10 up and running, would you mind answering my question here please? Don't understand why such a simple question has no responses - is the forum dying?

I upgraded both pcs so MS knows them. My question has to do with the disc. I used the media tool and instead of booting off of it F12 I just played it like a movie and ended up with just a clean upgrade instead of a clean install.
If I had booted off of the disc F12 would I have been able to do differently, that is, create a clean install.
I also have an iso file dvd - would I be better off with this rather than the media tool and should I boot off of it F2 rather than just play it like a movie. i think I am getting too old/ill to remember the protocols or methods but need to keep the machines running.
    TY

FWIW, Defender has a right click scan option under custom.
