Disconnected HD, computer freezes

I have a computer with AMD64 processor. 2GB Ram, 2 Hard disks, Win. XP2SE.
The HD with Windows installed is a SATA with drives C-D-E and plenty of space. Installed to SATA0 on 0 (Primary ATA Channel)
All programs and data is installed/stored on this HD.

The second HD, with drives F-G was connected some time after i got the computer and is installed to IDE2 on 0 (Secondary ATA channel) and is only used for backups.

Now, when I disconnect the second HD, the computer boots fine, but as sun as I click on an icon, the computer friezes.

I would like a good explanation on this problem.

It would be worth running CHKDSK tosee if files need fixing.
Usually after you click start, run, and type in CHKDSK, CLICK O.K, Widows will say do you want to run it on restart, click yes/o.k, and restart.
If this does not solve it, you can try start, run, sfc /scannow, but you will need your XP disc, as it searches and replaces any corrupted protected Windows files, and you have to keep clicking retry in the little box- can take up to an hour.

 

as below, but use /r after chkdsk
ie: type in

chkdsk /r

Sorry, it did not mend anything.
Now I think to send the computer to be repaired since I think it might be the motherboard.
