    Personal Prefs at present are,

    AntiVirus ~ McAfee Pro7 ( desktop ) Avast ( laptop )

Firewall ~ Zone Alarm on both

AntiSpyware ~ A², MS Antispyware, SpywareBlaster, AdAware ( may dump AdAware at some point )

As to the question of whats the best well for me all of the above I listed as I have never contracted spyware/virii that have had to have me go through removal techinques, McAfee has caught them before they catch hold and cause damage.

As for reliable then again the above, apart from Ad-Aware at present which for me sems to have flaky updates that either work or put the software into a lop of installing the same update over and over again. Also reliable security techinqus are suplimented by keeping your OS upto date.

    Here's what works for me.....

AV....Trend Micro PC-cillin internet security (may go to AVG...free)
Firewal....same as AV (may go to Kerio....free)
Added protection......a-squared, MS Anti-spyware, SpyBot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware SE, CCleaner, Spyware blaster, Ewido. I just recently added Ewido and am a firm proponent of it. All this may be overkill or redundant. If anyone thinks so, please let me know.

I used Mcafee Enterprise8i,and it didnt find viruses and trojans that vor mine.I have a trojan SMIT is called it didnt find him,i have a script with nukers flooders, trojans and it didnt recognize them.I instaled Kaspersky and they vor all found. That is a example.

But i dont know what antispytool is the best.I used Adware*still do*but it cant find known trojans that i have, how can i trust it.SpySweper is for me very good but i cant register it,i have a serial*ilega*but ther is no place to entr it.Everybody is saying SpyDoctor is shit, why,i read that its the editors choice...bla bla bla...SpyBlaster i have the setupand i atend to use it.ZoneAlarm is oneofcind firewall I used Sygate, and i scanned my comp for open ports, and it find it*not good*Also if somebody wants to nuke you on mirc Sygate will let that,BitDefender to,ZoneAlarm no.
    That are all examples.
If you have some other comments share them please.

You think you guys had it rough........I turned around and came back when I hit the word McAfee. I've learned from the TV weather people not to drive into water you can't see thru.

In a few word -------McAfee Enterprise 8i aint good,Kaspersky is much beter.
I dont know about the newer versions of McAfee...
Which AntiSpyware tool has the most efective real time protection.
Its beter to have a AntiSpyware tool that has a beter realtime protection, then the one that can find the spyware when its already in your comp.
AdWare thas not alow New Proces changes, without our permision, and blocks tracking cookies, but it lets trojans trough very easily...
    What are your sugestions...

If its a free tool, and reputable, then might as well use any extra programs you can get, even if they do/may overlap.

    What I use:

    Anti-Virus: NOD32
    Firewall: Outpost Firewall Pro 3.0
    Anti-Spyware: Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE Pro, SpywareBlaster,Bazooka, SpyCop
    Anti-Trojan: A-Squared Beta, Tauscan, BOClean
Others: Script Sentry, Worm Guard, MVP Host File

Ewido, A-Squared, or Ad-Aware paid should be good for realtime protection. If you want to prevent spyware etc from getting into your computer then its better too have real time protection running ;)

    Ad-Aware doesn't have real-time protection. (Ad-watch)

Only Ad-Aware SE Plus, Professional and Enterprise packages do.

From what I "gathered" here, you may want to visit the spyware forums. SMIT could be smitfraud, wich is malware.

I recommend visiting the malware forums to be sure your system is definately clean:

    Visit and follow:

well, from what i have learned (or think i learned) from all you guys here is that Mcafee and Norton both suck, and are utterly pointless to pay for when you have equal if not better quality protection from freeware. nod32 and kaspersky though, are worth it because they dish out more protection than freeware and norton/mcafree. let me know if i sound right, or if i just happen to ben an idiot.

There is no reason to call yourself this. Everyone has to start somewhere, to gain their computer knowledge. Not everyone knows everything. :)

I am new to this... so.. I have been following your advise regarding many of the things that were bogging down my computer and making me want to throw it out the window (no Windows pun intended, however I do believe they call it windows for a reason!) I have gotten rid of mcaffee and norton, gotten AVG, Ad aware, spybot, etc.... and now for the Grand Finale*** A O L . The problem? I cannot uninstall my dreaded aol 8.0. It is not listed in my add/remove program list. There is no "uninstall AOL" file listing I can find. I even tried to manually delete each entry associated with "aol" listed under search, but it won't let me... now how to I get out of A O hell?

Just an added from me. Ewido, frequently finds smitfraud. My other malware detectors do not seem to find any. For what it's worth.................

As a former Norton user, stand back and run. Norton in my opinion, tries to be the cosmopolitan of Anti-virus protection but all is does is hog up resources and sit in your registry quietly-even after you think that you have uninstalled it. I could write a short story on my experience...listen to the board.

I have AVG - AdAware SE Pro (with Ad-Watch SE Pro), Spybot S&D, Stinger, SpyWare Blaster, CCleaner, CleanUp! and Ewido and, although not technically belonging on this list, Registry Mechanic.

May seem like overkill but the mix of live protection and then a full scan on all of these gives me the peace of mind I need to sleep at night! :) I know that what one of these may miss another will catch.

Yes, I saw it, however, there is no such thing as Ad-aware paid if you want to be pedantic.

I was trying to help the original poster, however, by the turn this thread is taking, I can see that was a silly gesture.

    Goodbye and goodluck everyone.

I dont have a firewall software programme no - however, I use a router as I am sharing my internet connection and that does a good job.

Yeah routers do, do a good job of blocking most internet traffic and pings etc. But it wouldnt hurt too add a free software firewall just to monitor applications and there internet access ;)
