I've always been curious when Disk Cleanup function is performed in Windows XP Pro sp 2...as it scans it says "compressing old files". Where are they physically compressed too? Are they necessary to retain on the drive & can they be deleted?

Usually compressing files is not recommended unless you really need to free up space in hdd. They are still on the hdd and could be removed in the same manner as any other files. If you have ample free space, I would not compress files.

Appreciate your response. I was under the impression for a long time that it was wise to use the "disk cleanup" feature in Windows. You've indicated that disk cleanup, i.e., compress files, is not recommended...can you explain why so that I can get a clear understanding? Thankyou
