I am running win2000. My Disk Defrag says I only have 6% free space and will not let me defrag. I have stripped everything I can off of my drive to no avail.

I was trying to burn photos from a digital camera as an F-Drive to my Nero and burner. It would not let me do so as it said I did not have the capacity. I have done this process many times with no problems. A few days ago my system reported 60% free space.
I do not have any games or junk on my system. No music, photos, or anything that should be doing this. All was well a few days ago. I have nothing left to strip off my system to free more space. Any suggestions? Do I have a virus or some system problem.
I have run all of my anti virus and malware tools. All checks out fine. Am in need of help and very puzzled by this situation.

You could weel be suffering from a virus if your free space has gone down so dramatically in such a short period of time.

Run your Anti Virus making sure you have the latest virus definitions

I would then search for all photo type files. It may be that some how you have gone and copied the photos several times and that is what is taking up the space.

If you still can't defrag, and you will need around 15% free space in order to do so, I suggest removing any programs you don't use much. Delete the TMP fles and LOG files or at least copy them to somewhere else.

    Then try to run Defrag.

Norton requires at LEAST 15% free space to run

    Good luck

    Hello Frodo,
I have updated and run my antivirus- Trend Micro, Adaware, Spybot, CW Shredder, Avast Cleaner, and the list goes on. All shows clean. I still am stuck with only 6%. I have removed almost every inactive program. I am sitting bare bones and am still full. I should have tons of drive space. If the photos did copy in whole or part all over the drive, any ideas as to how to scan for them. I have used the typical file names and the extentions the Nikon places on its files. I have turned up nothing. Whats next?

Go to My Computer/C: and right click. Select properties. See what information is there. I have an idea that it's your disk defrag that is messed up, rather than your hard drive being full. Just snoop around in properties and look for clues, and then open C: and take a look at everything that it actually shows. You may also want to go to Tool/Folder Options, and select "show hidden files and folders".

Let's see what we find after you've done all that.

ACE, Here's a small disk-space checker that can be run from a floppy if you need to.

But you didn't say you had EMPTIED TEMP. I've found 20,000 objects in the Temp folders of people who edit pix or music files. Adobe folders are especially bad, too, and if you're running anything NORTON, you need to purge protected files, too.

The Temp you want emptied is the one in Docs & Setts\yourusername\Local Setts\ ...

    Hi Ace, check out

    Cleanup! http://www.stevengould.org/ Freeware 3.1
EmpTemp http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1575 Not for XP yet?
    and CrapCleaner v1.12.063 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

These 3, in conjunction, will get rid of all temp files, cookies, index.dat files, etc.

Your trouble may be a virus, but these 3 will help get rid of all the rest of the junk. I once ran Cleanup! on a friend's PC and it found and deleted +60,000 files. He had never cleaned up after internet sessions. Index.dat is one of the biggest hogs of space. Hope this helps. Bazza

    Thanks Everyone,
All of this advise is very helpfull as always. So far I have downloaded the TreeSize program from jam-software. It was very helpfull. I found two files that were huge. One was 6gig and another at 2gig. I deleted them and free space went to 81%. That is unreal.
The interesting thing was that they were both txt files labeled as log files to the program in a notepad format. Both created by my Trend Micro antivirus program. I called Trend and they cleared me to delete them safely, however had no answer as to why they balloned to such sizes. Was there not a virus out that was doing this to files?
My next step will be to use the tools supplied by Bigbazza next. I am still worried about a virus in here somewere, but all the checks are showing clean at this point, still looking.
On a side note, to keep my system clean I run a purchased version of CyberScrub Pro. It works well in clearing out most areas, especially the internet stuff, but does not go after the other files unfortunately.
I will get back to you all with the results.
    Again, Thanks.

    Hey Ace,

Glad you made some progress. Let us know if you are able to defrag. I hope you can figure out where all that stuff came from too.

    Take care,

    Eric

Yup, I ran into the MONSTER file size problem after I uninstalled Panda AV also -- ate 24.8 gigs of my 40 gig hd which happened to be all the available space on the drive. Don't know why some great proggies leave such humongous problems behind after uninstall.

    Hello Everyone,
I was able to successfully defrag. All is well once again. I did download and run the suggested tools such as c-Cleaner and Emp Temp. They both found a load of stuff to get rid of as well. These are great tools to have. I will run them every week to keep clean and tidy. My machine is running fast and smooth as it should.

Trend Micro is supposed to e-mail me as to why their program is creating such huge log files. Found another one belonging to them in my WINNT. Talk about bloat. I hope they actually respond with a solution or at least a reason.

So in conclusion, as always the Pros at Major Geeks have put their collective wisdom together and solved another tech problem. The great thing about all of this is that I learn a great deal every time I receive assistance from Major Geeks and learn just from cruising the site.
In the end, the problem becomes fun to solve, instead of frustrating, because of all of the great and easy to follow support and advice.
    Thankyou All.
