I am unable to defrag my C drive. The program launches and progress chart appears, but it advances only to 2 percent and then resets to zero. Keeps recycling between 0 and 2 percent. I'm running Windows 98 on a 13GB hard drive, at 450MHz, with 224 MB RAM. Hard drive performance shows 22 percent free space, which is why I'm trying to defrag. System response in general is very slow.

    Any suggestions?

  2. Heres what you gotta do. Simply close any unnesscisarry programs. If that fails try the defrag in safemode. Other than that i wouldnt know what is going on. (Oh yeah! scandisk before you do the defrag so you dont have any errors in the drive.)

Defragging isn't going to help the percentage of space left on your hard drive, but it should increase the performance if you haven't defragged in a while. As for the problem that you described, it is common on Win98 and ME systems. Most of the time it has to do with a background application such as an antivirus program. Go to the download section of MajorGeeks/Drive Utilities, and download Diskeeper Lite. It is a much better application than the standard one included in Win98. It should run without being reset, but if it doesn't try it in Safe Mode as the poster above suggested. Hope this helps! :)

I had that problem with a Win98 system. Disconnect the PC from the internet, then Hit "control-alt-delete" and open the task manager. Stop every task listed there EXCEPT "Systray" and "Explorer" - the OS needs these to function. You should then be able to degragment the drive.
I recommend downloading CCleaner from MG - it does a good job of finding and deleting junk files. The first time I used it on my Win98, it found 600mbs of useless files. Thats a good chunk of harddrive space!

  5. Yeah about what novice said, I wouldnt reccommend closeing all those programs down because there could be other programs in there that if turned off could cause your computer to run messed up anyway. Safe mode usually will close everything you need to run windows.

Check out my reply on http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=65553I see you use CCleaner. Install and run the other 2 as well, each day. Then defrag. As mentioned earlier, if you haven't defragged lately, then defrag will take a long time. After the first time, run defrag at least weekly. It won't take nearly as long if you do. Hope this helps. I think you should run scandisk firts for bad sectors.

I'd never be game enough to run anything from ME on my W98SE, especially a defragger, after all the bad press that ME gets.:p You're a braver person than me, Gunga Din.:D Bazza

bigbazza do a Google search and you'll see many people disagree with you. WinMe defrag is recommended for Win98 by many tech's. From my personal experience WinME defrag is about 5 times faster than Win98 defrag.

Some good advice has been posted already.

It's been long time since I ran 98, I had very similar problem, my solution was simple, I turned off my anti virus & firewall then defrag worked fine.
If you do same make sure your not online when doing so.

Much good advice has already been given. When I ran Win 98 to defrag I first disabled the screen saver then "control-alt-delete" and ended all processes except Systray and Explorer - I never had any trouble after I started doing that.

I'll reiterate previous postings about winme. The only good thing that came out of Windows ME was the defrag program. That was about it.

Has anyone checked out that windows 98 SE Unofficial service pack 2 that is hosted here? Well, it replaces the win98se defrag with the win ME defrag.

  14. I use diskeeper. The set it and forget it works great. I think major geeks has a lite version abvailible for download. And best of all with it.... other programs dont bother it at all and with set it and forget it can defrag in the background while you do whatever. The first time it will say the drive is pretty fragmented. Run it then the first time usually takes a little longer or if you have a big harddrive it can take a while. Other than that i would recommend you do that too. Or if you dont want try some of the good advice posted here for the defrag problem
