    Help...

    Here is my comp specs:
    Intel 3.06Ghz CPU
    512 MB Ram
    Disabled onboard video
    PCI 128MB Geforce FX5500
WDC 40 GB HD ~partitioned by XP
    DVD+R CD drive
    substantial cooling

It was working before the last system restore, and then it quit working. Please note I've used system restore on this computer enough and it is now a last resort for any problem. A few days ago I checked disk defragmenter and after analysis I got a report saying I should defragment the drive. I didn't, because I didn't have time to. But after the last restore the defragmenter doesn't analyze or defragment. Doesn't even give effort to think about it. I tried running scan disk, disk cleanup, and rebooting. Nothing. I also tried using software repair wizard and other things, but nothing lists or supports the disk defragmenter. The reason for the last restore is because for no reason Microsoft Works stopped working. I even tried reinstalling it and it still said a file was missing and could not run. Also, now after the last restore when I save a file from paint, wordpad and other things I get a message that says: unable to register document. It saves, but why the message?? Any help would be appreciated.

First thing I would try is sfc .....start / run / type "sfc /scannow" without qoutes and have your xp disk handy ...run it atleast twice to be sure.

That sounded like it would work. Unfortunately, after it got done running (which took forever) nopthing happened. Still have all the problems. Also, I have an XP disk, but the computer itself came with no disks.

Run error-checking on your hard drive, then try defrag in safe mode.

Try using a 3rd party defragger like DiskKeeper or AusLogics...

You might try using Diskeeper Lite 7.0 Build 418 or O&O Defrag 2000 Freeware Edition 3.5.562 both of which are available as freeware here at Major Geeks (in the "Drive Utilities" section).

As forum member "hopperdave2000" mentioned; Auslogics Disk Defrag 1.1.1 is also available as well in the Major Geeks "Drive Utilities" section.

    Good Luck!
