disk drive

i got a major prob my disk drive thing is acting up it sounds like the disc is spinging very very fast and the lens i thank is raising to far up and touching the disc and it distroyed my morrowind game... and when i hit the button to open it the disc comes out spining. i was wounding can i FIX this?

and on a side note i was woundering is there a freeware programe that let me know what all is wroung with my pc cuz a lot of things are starting to act up lately

im on xp i just downloaded sp2 last night and the computer is a HP and the cpu is a celeron and thats about all i know about the computer

 

That sounds like a pretty major machanical fault on your drive,the accuracy the head has to move makes repair practically impossible,even if you were able to get the part from another drive 'which would probably have to be the same brand model' and then ofcourse theres collateral damage to other components,drives are cheap as chips ATM theres no reason not buy a new one

If you'v been running without service pack two and connecting to the internet you may have been infected by spyware,have you been running updated firewall,antivirus and antispyware software?check the sticky's in the spyware forum

how old is the computer,you'll have to be more specific with the problems your having,whats been 'acting up',there are many pc doctor type programs around most of them are not free and may not even help with your problems

 

i dont know how old the computer is severl years tho as far as things going wroung is a big list lol programs are working giving all types of error getting a lot of runtime errors on the internet etc. thats y im looking for a program that will tell me whats broken or what ever so i can tell you guess cuz one after another somthing gets messed up.

 

as far as the safty programs i have ad-ware spybot windows defender and avast and ccleaner but none of them are fixing ne thing

 

None of those are firewalls which is the most important peice of software for security,without a firewall or service pack 2 your computer was a sitting duck,I dont wanna recommend any software firstly because I dont use them and your problem could be hardware or spyware related in which it would be a waste of money buying one

EDIT how long have you been running without service pack 2 or a firewall?

 

umm i dont know but for the firewall it says its on i guess a firewall came with the computer cuz i dont thank i have one

 

but one thing that i just remmbered is my step mom did this real big system restore type thing and thats when most of the probs started but that was like a few weeks ago

 

The firewall that comes with windows is inadequate protection,I recommend you start a thread in the spyware forum,record as much of the error messages as you can to give them as much info as possible,read the stickies before you post anything,if they ask for your hijack this log follow the sticky instructions very carefully
