I tried to run a system restore on my computer and the answer that came up was disk failure. System restore could not be ran. If there something I can do to correct the disk that has failed.
HP system 2048 MB Ram just updated
    Home Vista Basic
    s7713w desktop
Thank you I am not to smart when it comes to computers.
:-o Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Before you do anything else make sure your RAM update hasn't loosened any internal cables.

If these are OK is there any way you can take the drive out and connect it to another PC with Vista?

This was more ram added to the hard drive. I just wanted more ram in it. I guess that is not called an update. The computer store placed the ram in it for me and cleaned out the hard drive of dust. My AVG free virus has had an alert which is holding a trojan. I place it in the vault and after shutdown, and reboot with the IE being opened the alert is back. Was going to try to do a system restore. No luck. I have found that I also can not run Malwarebytes, and several other malware or spyware on my computer without them freezing -- then I go back in and uninstall. Is there something that I can run to see if it is a desk failure? The computer itself seems to be running ok. Thank You for answering.
I know almost nothing about computers. Lana

I'll try for only one post this time.

Lana please try and give us an ordered sequence of events.
End with a statement of what actually happens when you (try to ) boot the pc.

It may be possible to recover from the problem.

You may well make matters worse by trying things to attempt repair.

I will try again. I am so sorry. Back on 5/8 I had 1 GB of new RAM added to my computer s7713w HP with Vista Home Basic. When it was was running at home after installation of new ram it would overhead and shut down. I called the computer store and they said to bring it back down. They hooked it up to a stress test and it shut down on them so they decided to clean it out. Brought it home and it ran fine except for the print being overly light after adding new ram.
On 5/8 I was on the computer looking around and must have picked up a trojan. AVG free popped up with an alert Trojan horse Agent2.GUF
    Trojan horse Agent2.GUF
I can contain only one of these in the vault. It will not contain the other. No more problems with AVG alert & trojans untill after shut down. When computer is booted and I click on IE to open it AVG alert pops back up with its trojan alert. I have ran the virus scan on the computer and it is clean. I have tried to use malwarebytes and other malware removeal to no avail, they all freeze while scanning. Decided I would try a system restore and have found out that the computer tells me there is a disk failure and that the system has remained the same. Lana

OK I understand your sequence of events.

5/8/09 was a bad day for you!

I think that you need to separate the problems.

Some malware is particularly nasty and can suppress anti programs.
Never try to cure a virus with System Restore. If we get you pc going without reformat look here for antimalware help.

Do you have a Vista or HP recovery disk?

Boot with it in the drive and press space when prompted "press any key to boot from CD"

    Select languuage etc

    Select Repair

Select the hard drive with windows

Select the OS to repair -there should only be one>next

    select 'startup repair'

Let us know how you get on

Obviously you got your pc to boot again

    Well Done.

You will be very lucky indeed if you have fully cleaned your system. Anything capable of suppressing malwarebytes etc is pretty hard to eradicate and usually hides other stuff.

So I strongly advise you to complete the MG cleaning procedure

You at least have the luxury of no urgency.

I would also advise using the HP 'burn your own recovery disk' procedure.

Are you quite sure you did not have a recovery DVD with the machine. Sometimes they look like advertising and are called something like

    'Microsoft Vista Experience or Upgrade'

    Studiot;)
These are the steps I took myself and my computer through all day yesterday.
    1. MsConfig was set for normal start up.
    2. Startup mode system restore was shut down.
    3. AVG was ran leaving "scan infectable files only unchecked" in there directions. This took longer to run like over 2 hours but was well worth it. 2-virus worm/autorun found and 3-trojan horseaagent2.GUF found 1-trojan horse backdoor.Generic 11.OlK found.
4.MalwareBytes was ran 1-malware found and 2-trojan found in folder and 2- found in registry key.
5.Spybot search and destroy was ran. They have been immunized so I am not sure how many there were. Shutdown and reboot of system after each clean was done.
    6. I then re-ran all venues AVG, MalwareBytes, & Spybot Search and Destroy.
During second run all came up clean. Shut down and restart after each scan.
    7. Turned my system restore back on.
    8. I did look again in my paperwork I received when I purchased the computer. There is a disk that says "Upgrade your windown Vista Experience"
I thought this ment upgrade to the next level. The sheet says follow the instructions on the screen to buy the upgrade online.
Everything seems to be running fine, so I pray I have got all worms and virus contained. If there is anything else I should do please advise. Again I want to thank you very much for staying with me through all of this. Sometimes it just helps to talk to someone else. Thanks again. For me being a beginner in anything computer, I feel I did ok, although it did take my whole day.:wave

    Yes well done again ;)

But just because an anti program comes up clean doesn't make your system clean.

Look again at the link I posted. The last download (MGtools) is designed to proove you have no further malware.

The Vista experience disk contains all versions of Vista - you just need a to buy a code from Msoft to upgrade. They also function as a recovery disk.
    check with you HP dealer.
