    To Whom It May Concern,

I am trying to install a brand new Seagate 160 GB Hard Drive and Windows XP or W2000.
I have no operating system on the computer.
My original 30 gig drive died.

    I have a Compaq 5WV280, 900 MHz AMD Athlon Processor w/ 384 Ram.

I am trying to install a brand new Seagate 160 GB Hard Drive and Windows XP or W2000.
I have a Promise Technology Inc. Ultra133TX2 Controller card.
My brother in law said I need this card in order to recognize the 160 gig. Only saw 130 originally.

Message says 149 gig right at Boot up. I set the jumper to CS and Master and get the same error.
Not sure if there is a Bios Update. Went to Compaq website and had Rom Update for Windows XP from 11/30/2001.
The machine originally had Windows ME, then I changed it to W2000. Now I'm trying to put on XP or 2000.
Could that be the problem? Can I update the Bios w/out an O/S being installed?

    Here are the details.
    Trying to Install Windows XP:
I am getting the Windows Set Up Blue screen w/ the message at the bottom that says "Set Up is Starting Windows".
And it hangs at this point. I have waited 10-15 minutes up to 5 hours to over night and still does not start Windows?

I have no operating system on the computer.

The Controller card is installed w/ the Ribbon into IDE1 and going directly to the Hard Drive.

I am getting the same results with the Hard Drive set to 'Cable Select' or 'Master'.

This is the sequence of events:

I boot up w/ Windows XP Cd-Rom in Drive.
As soon as I boot up I see "Detecting'" message
I see d0 and something about "lba and detecting 149 gig"
    I see d1, d2, d3 "Not Detected"
    Screen is Black.
After about 1 minute message says "Set Up is inspecting your hardware configuration"
    Screen is still black,
After about 5 minutes of blank black screen
I get Blue screen "Windows Set Up" is displayed up top left.
I hit F6 as per Controller Card instruction manual to install scsi or raid driver
    Insert Controller Card Floppy Disk - Ultra100 TX2/133 TX2, Ver V1.01 20031009
Choose "WinXP Promise Ultra 133 TX2 Controller" from list
Screen is still Blue w/ "Windows Set Up" is displayed up top left. and Loads a few files
Then Bottom of screen displays "Set Up is Starting Windows" and hangs here??

If I boot up and do NOT hit F6 I get the following message "Set Up did Not find any hard disk drive installed in your computer"

W2000 pretty much same as above although Windows Blue Screen comes up very quickly. ( which is correct, I believe )
I get a "Disk I/O error: Status = 00008001 and Failed to arcread the boot partition to check for a disk signature" ERROR
Choose "Win2000 Promise Ultra 133 TX2 Controller" from list
Then get Disk I/O Error again and hangs?

Any idea of what to try next?

Thank you in advance for your help,

Has the new hard Drive been partitioned so it can accept a new OS? If it hasn't then Windows won't detect it.

I think the problem you are having is that your BIOS does not support 48-bit logic block addressing and that is why your cousin suggested getting that adapter, but your motherboard either doesn't support booting from that adapter or you haven't set the right BIOS switch to enable booting from that adapter. In your case, I would suggest disconnecting the PCI adapter and just connecting your hard disk directly to your motherboard. When you format the drive, format in two partitions of less than 137 gigs each so you can make use of the entire drive.

Thank you guys for responding so quickly. But I had already put the HD directly into the Motherboard. I believe you were correct that it was a conflict w/ the Controller card, an old PC, and a new HD. After going directly to from the motherboard to the HD, it only recognized 131 of the 160. No biggie, it is still 4 times what I had.

Also, when you said "When you format the drive, format in two partitions of less than 137 gigs each so you can make use of the entire drive."
did you mean that I should have partitioned it at 80 and 80, which would equal 160? When it came up to the partition piece it only showed 131 gig?

You also said "Partiton the New HD so it can accept a new OS? If it hasn't then Windows won't detect it."
I didn't get a chance to Partition the new hard Drive. But would that have definitely worked?

At this point, is there a way, now that I have an O/S W-XP, w/ 130 gig installed, that I can reformat or whatever, so that I can see the Full 160 Gig?

    thanks for your help,

    So what is it?

You got an IDE Hard disk eh? No point in installing SCSI drivers or setting up a Raid system as you only have 1 Hard disk
    Im confused

If it is a brand new Hard Drive it MUST be partioned first before you do anything else. You CANNOT load an OS without the disk being partioned.
