In the event of a catastrophe befalling one's computer, I'm thinking that a disk image would probably be the absolute best way to go to return a computer to just the way it was beforehand. Is this what the cognoscenti would advise, and if so, what disk imaging program would y'all recommend?

I make monthly images of four Win 7 computers using Acronis. It is a paid program and can be a bit hard to figure out.

I do not install it. I created a CD and USB stick. I boot the computer with either of this, the program loads into RAM and I can create or restore an image.

I've restored images about 6 or 7 times to various computers. Not due to a hard drive failure but other glitches. It is easier to restore than to waste hours, days and perhaps longer to try and figure out what update, program or tweak caused a problem.

Do you have Acronis on Rescue Media on the chance that if you needed to restore a disk image, quite possibly the computer wouldn't be otherwise bootable?
