I formatted the 2nd drive, it is only used for backups and I wanted to delete all the old backups on it and start with a new backup. However Windows did not complete the format and I could not access the disk anymore. The long and the short of it is that now the file has lost it's D: drive-letter, and does not show in the disk list on my computer. It is viewable in disk management and appears as a number, it's allocated a 0. I am attaching some of the Windows readings.

Can you not assign a drive letter through Disk Management by right clicking on it?

Hi Mcadam, unfortunately, no. When I right click I get the following options: new simple volume, properties, help. None offer the assignment of a new drive letter.

New simple volume ..then format it.

I think I tried that, I'll have another go. Problem seems to be that it is the 2nd hard-drive.

May have been asked already ...but you do have the jumpers set properly?

Perhaps you should remove both ...put it in as a master and start the xp install cd...up to the point where it finishes a complete format ...after which just pop out the cd ...kill the power and then reinstall the other hard drive as master and that as slave.

OK Tim, I have done the simple volume bit. Here are the screenshots, does this look alright to you?

By the way, I am running vista home premium. Can I now run that new volume disk as a back-up disk?

It seems that I can indeed use the disk as a back-up disk again.

Sorry I wasn't around to reply as I would've suggested this.

Thank you Tim for taking over this :)
