Friends: My hard drive would not boot up but keeps giving error message: "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". I tried a Repair install but could not complete it. When I tried Windows Recovery Console it keeps asking for installation disk. Memory tests and hard drive tests passed. Any ideas how to fix this? How can I get a Recovery Console download for a bootable CD? Windows XP. Thanks for any help.

You just may be in luck as I have, for some mystifying reason, found that I have kept a copy of rc.iso, the 32 bit bootable XP recovery console. My problem is I'm pretty sure it is neither legal nor within forum rules for me to just upload this somewhere and post a link for you (and everyone else) to use.

I'm contacting a senior moderator to find out what I can and cannot do so, unless you come up with another solution, please wait. I will be back.

No reply so I'm trying a different one. Let us know if you resolve it.

Seems that offering you Microsoft copyright material via the forum may have legal implications so no can do.

The advice the guy I approached says this - "can the user find a friend with an XP CD, if they can they can always Slipstream a Service Pack into whichever one they can find, unless its already SP3. Somewhere on the forum I have in a thread a slipstream guide for XP."

I will also ask the owner about this and let you know if it changes anything.

mdonah: Thanks for your help. The disk was too far gone, beyond repair. I had an old clone which I used. Thanks anyway. Cheers!

Earthling: Many thanks for the file. The disk was too corrupted to be repaired. Luckily I had an old clone which I worked from. Thanks again. Cheers!
