    Hey all,

I had problems getting my computer to read my HP dvd-writer 200i drive correctly.

First, the bios doesn't detect it under secondary master (only driv eon the cable)

Second, Windows DID detect it, but in device manager it said that "the device cannot start"

I set the jumper to cable select, and now Device manager picks it up with no yellow exclaimation mark, and so does My Computer, but when I try to explore ANY cd from my computer by clicking on teh drive...it says

    "E:/ is not accessible

the disk structure is corrupted and unreadable"

I'm thinking the drive may be bad.

OK, here is th updated situation:

My Pri IDE detects both HD and CD devices
My Secondary IDE detect HD devices ONLY!

I have my DVD-R set as master and my HD as slave on the primary IDE controller and it all works.

OK, could be a bad IDE channel.

Why would the IDE detect Hard Disk Devices but not Removable Media devices...that's a weird defect....

Agreed. If it recognizes the DVD-R on one channel it shuld recognize it on the other.

Anyone else have any ideas. I'm lost on this one.

Have you ever had a drive go bad on the secondary channel?

I have seen this happen on one of the Dells at school, except it woul detect removable madia but hard disks. A hard drive had gone bad in the system (which caused the problem). When we pulled the drive out of the system it was almost to hot to touch.

    Here's the thing.

The secondary picks up only hard drives

The primary picks up hard drives AND cd/removable media drives

I put my dvd-r drive as master and my 20GB HD as slave on the primary IDE controller, now I can use both and it works.

Still, the mobo not detecting multimedia drives on teh secondary IDE channel is weird..that's my concern

oh and ALSO: My floppy does NOT read disks....

    Howdy,
Have your floppy problems been going on since the problem with the secondary IDE channel occured? It could have happend when you were working inside the computer; such as, you could have unplugged the drive and put the cable back on backwards.

Nah, the cable has one pin hole closed to prevent that. The 1.44 Floppy is recognized by the OS and BIOS, but it doesn't read anything all of a sudden.

Also, I've recently learned of a way to upgrade the mobo without reconfiguring hardware with a .exe called sysprep.exe

    Anyone familiar?

Have you tried flashing the bios, and updating and REINSTALLING all of you motherboard drivers, like you IDE controller driver, for example??

Piece of advice...if you've never flashed a bios before, then either make DARN SHURE you know what you are doing or get someones that does to do it for you!! If it is done wrong...you might as well drop kick the motherboard out of a second story window!!!!
