    G'day.
Messing around with an old computer I picked up. It only has 16 colour display and 800x600 res. It has a video card, and I'm having a lot of trouble finding a driver that I can download. I've bee
to DriverGuide with no success. They sent me to Nvidia and to another site, and I did no good there. Details are:
    Computer:
Operating System Microsoft Windows 98 SE
    OS Service Pack -
    DirectX 4.09.00.0904 (DirectX 9.0c)

    Motherboard:
CPU Type Intel Pentium IIIE, 800 MHz (6 x 133)
    Motherboard Name DFI CA61/CB50-V3/CB60-V3/PA61/PB50-V3/PB61-V3
Motherboard Chipset VIA VT82C693A Apollo Pro133
    System Memory 384 MB (SDRAM)
    BIOS Type Award Modular (09/25/00)
    Communication Port Communications Port (COM1)
    Communication Port Communications Port (COM2)
Communication Port ECP Printer Port (LPT1)

    Display:
Video Adapter Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
    3D Accelerator nVIDIA Vanta
    Monitor HP D8901 [17" CRT] (MY02500485)

    Any help greatly appreciated, aslways.

Thanks Halo. I hadn't tried them - and they got closer than anything I had tried. I managed to get it so I could select other display options, but I haven't been able to get them to stick. It resets to 16 colour as soon as I exit from display properties, and when I reboot (as it asks me to), it gives me the error:

I tried another card I have here (ATI 3D-RAGE IIC), but I couldn't get the driver I found for that to install, although I didn't uninstall the other one before trying (maybe that was the problem). It kept hanging when it was modifying the registry.

Have you installed the chipset drivers? You can download 'em from this link. You should uninstall the video drivers first, install the chipset drivers, reboot, then 'force' the video drivers to install by using the device manager "have disk" method and even if Windows complains, install the driver anyway and reboot, and you should be OK.
    :-D
    Good luck!

Thanks dlb. I'll give it a try. :)
I'm a little distracted at teh moment - we're having a hard rubbish collection here at the moment (you leave your rubbish (trash) on teh nature strip next to the footpath (sidewalk) and the local council sends a truck around and picks it all up). Well, someone was throwing out a P4 with XP Pro ( :-D !!!!) which, as far as I can tell so far, works perfectly well (um... that is to say... I don't think the council truck will be picking it up... rolleyes)
Anyway, the only prob is that it has an admin password, and I'm trying to get around that. I'd better not say how, as I have heard there are rules about that - good thing too.
The other thing is, it says teh XP version is not genuine (a msg comes up on boot - at least it gets that far!). I have heard of that happening to genuine versions (I think), so if I can get into it, I'll try to check it out.

Not to get off topic here, but you can use the info and download at this link to create a boot CD that will allow you to erase/change the XP admin password. As to the non-genuine problem: check the case for a product key sticker and compare it to the key installed on the PC (you can use Produkey to extract the key from the PC). If they're the same, then you can simply call MS licensing and get it straightened out. If they don't match, then change the key to the sticker number (you may have to reload Windows if the sticker is for XP Home and the PC has XP Pro installed). I have seen many, MANY systems with legit XP Home stickers, but someone figured that XP Pro was 'better' so they installed a "borrowed" copy or one of the many bootlegged versions from the web; when they try to install Windows Updates, they get branded with the non-genuine message. If there is no product key sticker, you can try to rectify the situation my searching the MS Knowledge Base for workarounds for incorrect non-genuine messages, but Microsoft has done a real good job with fixing the WGA checking and very, very few PCs are incorrectly branded as being non-genuine (legit PCs had a problem once in a while a couple years ago, but this has been fixed for the most part), so chances are that the PC has a pirated/counterfeit product key. The only legal way to rectify this is to buy a legal full version of Windows and re-install. You can simply remove the 'this windows may be counterfeit' messages, but this really doesn't fix the problem.

Dumb question, but would using a flat panel monitor with something that old cause any hardware issues? I seem to remember using VGA back in the PIII days...

Thanks dlb. That's excellent info :) Looks like I'll have plenty to do this weekend. Not sure how good the HDD is on this 'treasure' - it's making a few groaning noises (2002 vintage). I've had a Ubuntu Live CD running on it.

No worries for me there mekanic, we're still on the CRT's.

Success :). Used the suggested boot CD, but default path to registry didn't work. Neither did any of the suggested alternatives. Had to boot on Ubuntu CD and find out what path was. All OK after that. Now to check on Genuine Windows...
    Thanks again, dlb.
