Display Problem

recently, we've been having trouble with getting our laptop display turned on. i will push the power button, and i can hear the processor and everything working correctly, but the display is just black. i will try about 15 times to get it turned on, until it finally works. once it's on, it gives me no problems.

also, a couple of times it displayed the windows loading screen but it repeated across the screen and flickered.

the laptop is a HP Pavilion dv9000, and runs on XP if that helps.
