Display Theme Changes

There is a previous thread by another poster on this subject, but no responses. So here it goes again...

System: Windows XP Professional, sp3
Hardware: Has affected two separate systems, #1 is Dell 8400; #2 is home build with Asus motherboard.
Problem: On reboot, the display color theme and screen saver settings occasionally change.

Details: System is set for Windows Classic and "none" for screen saver. About every 10 reboots, system reverts to Windows XP color theme and XP screen saver. The display properties box still shows "Windows Classic" grayed. If I click the drop-down, then click on Windows Classic, then apply, those settings are applied. But the change is not permanent and reverts after another 10 reboots or so. It's annoying. Screen saver settings also change from "none" to XP, but I can set a very long time for the screen saver to appear, so that problem has not been such an annoyance.

I have run the MS malware removal tool, but problem still exists.

Any help or suggestions?
