Displaying Active Desktop Item

Running Windows 2000 Pro. I have Active Desktop enabled, Show Web Content enabled, with my home page and Google as separate desktop items (ie, channels) checked to be displayed. However, these do not show up - just a regular looking desktop. I made sure I don't have any background wallpaper selected that would be hiding behind. Am I missing something here?

No policies have been configured, so I should be able to do this through the Display properties actions I did above, but something is missing to actually show the desktop items. Any ideas?

I'm going to feel real dumb if there's an obvious (which escapes me at the moment - obviously ;) ) answer to this.

[edit] Just remembered something, if I click on the View Channels button, IE comes up with a blank page - hope this gives a clue to what's going on.

Do you have the Content Advisor enabled?

If so, disable it and see if that helps...

Try to enable and disable active desktop couple of times. And refresh by right clicking on dektop. See if it helps. Alanc m8 has a nice point. Check the advisor status.

Thanks, gave it a shot and ....Content Advisor's not enabled (when I go there the button says to enable), and enable/disable AD a couple times hasn't worked. Nothing being displayed except, of course, my shortcuts and desktop related icons. I'll try going without wallpaper for a while and see what happens

    Whew!!! I got it ....

Nothing in MSKB articles. However, I went through the motions of adding a New Desktop Item in Active Desktop (AD) and went to MSN site that contained some samples. Installed one and searched for in it the registry. Found the entry under the key "HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-....\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components". There was a key on the right pane called "Settings" that was set to "0". So I changed it to "1". Enabled/disabled AD a couple of times and voila!! It worked. I'm a happy camper now.

I have no idea how this happens, but I'm definitely going to keep this info for the future. :)

There are many things in heaven and earth.. oops.. Windows and Hardware that can't be explained. Glad to hear that you got it right at last. :)
