I have a DELL inspiron 1525 laptop with vista and watched alot of movies online with it using DivX - during watching one the dell computer bluescreened and can now not go beyond the startup repair mode and I have some blue screen error info but not much. I'm concerned about recovering the dell laptop but am also concerned about ruining my friends HP pavilion entertainment laptop he lent me and attempting to use DivX to watch movies ( havent downloaded DivX yet to it ).

is there some way to tell how healthy or compatible a computer is to utilize a specific kind of driver such as DivX or others to know if I have enough RAM or memory or whatever else might be needed to run the the kind of drivers I mention? one of my problems might have been something to do with an older version of DivX being better than the most recent 2.0 one and I had to switch from the newer update back to the older version.

the other issue is the dell laptop, i have no recovery CD/DVD as I got it as is second hand so all I have left after powering on is an automatic kick in to startup repair and the options given after it does its scan ( command prompt black screen window is one ? ).

can you take a screenshot or some how provide the minidump log? What OS were you using and were there any errors prior to the BSOD?

Watching movies should not break a computer. There is probably something else that has broken it.

screenshot would be next to impossible considering the state its in ( dell ) I can get next too no functions out of it and unfortunately the blue screen errors were only there when they appeared. I didnt take down the whole page, unless there is some way to induce the process again. I was using vista home basic on the dell.

all i really got were the stop codes from the two bluescreens' : -( first one ) :
    stop 0x0000001a - included in the first blue screen error was : bad pool header // ( second one ) : stop 0x00041790 0xC08017B2 0x0000FFFF 0x00000000.

I did have some issues with maleware right at the time this happened and was working with chaselang from the malware forum but his and my reading of the correction of those problems was that it was a success. that the maleware was removed but no blue screen errors as such, as I have said, I did have big problems watching movies online with DivX so I'm not doing that now with the HP laptop for now.

the dell can only go into startup repair and its option menu after, suggest how I can get the minidump logs from there? otherwise that is as far as that computer will go.

could be a memory issue... have you tried removing one memory module at a time and see what happens?

dont know how to do that, could you give me instructions on that?

also tried to start it up again and this is what I got : unmountable_boot_volume
    technical information : ***STOP:0X000000ED ( 030, C0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 )
startup repair - root cause found : the operating system version is incompatible with startup repair.
