Me and my sibling have computers connected to a 1MB internet connection through a Dlink router, the problem is my brothers computer is constantly downloading large files (20gb each) this takes up all the bandwidth and leaves me waiting 5 minutes for the google search page open. Obviously I have tried disconnecting his computer to the internet which speeds my connection up to normal speed but it causes arguements. So how do i get the router to share the bandwidth equally or allow my computer to be the dominant network user?

    What model router is it?

I know some advanced models have bandwidth regulation called QOS (quality of service) and you can set bandwidth limits.

There may be some software that regulates this as well, but nothing immediately jumps to mind.

Well depending on what program your brother is using, to download you may be able to schedule/limit his downloads, might be worth starting there.

My router is a Dlink DI 524.
My brother is using bitcomet I would go in and change his settings but he keeps his computer behind a locked door.

Honstatly theres two ways around this problem, a tech solution, or the better one, explain your problems to your brother, im pretty sure bitcomet has a scheduling feature, which can be used to schedule times that its active, but i really think if you explain your problem to your brother, and talk it over, you can easily find a better solution to this then you trying to limit him, which likly to cause him to try to do the same to you, and cause problems.

I have tried talking to him but he locks himself away in his room. He isnt very perceptable to reason when it comes down to his downloads he wants it fast and now. As for him doing the same he doesnt know how to I taught him to use the internet and built his computer. Im not being selfish I just dont want to be waiting 30mins just to find out what times the movies are playing.

There is nothing you can do about it unless you get a Router that allows Qos control.

And even then you have to set it and password the settings so he can not change the settings to his favor.

Might be that parent mitigation is the thing to go with.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure of another way besides what cat5e and Colemanguy are saying. Good luck regardless!
