Who can tell me what these are, just where they come from, how they are built and what good are they?

and how do I keep that rascal Kernel32.dll from popping his ugly head up and closing my browser?

"DLL" ... Dynamic Link Library. In the most rudimetry explination (the only one I know ... lol) ... they are files that your programs call upon for information. A crude example would be that your word processor is run from the file word.exe - then when you run your spell checker, it calls upon the spellchecker.dll for the information.

As far as kernel32.dll ... I do know it's a biggie for windows all by itsself. part of the shell so to speak. perhaps kodo, or flying penguin or one more geekie than I can offer a more detailed explination.

Sounds more and more like a problem with the memory stick on my new computer. Well, my new one should be here tomorrow. I suppose I will have to reinstall Win98 one more time if that is indeed the problem with my new paperweight. Keep your fingers crossed!

This is one I found out by experience.
Go to www.dll.com and find any missing dll there. It's free so that's an extra bonus.

Sometimes when you remove a program, you accidently remove an important dll also, or it gets modified beyond use.

Check it out. It's very easy.
If I can do it, anyone can.www.dll.com

This error doesn't mean your memory stick is faulty. I used to get this error with WinME all of the time, possibly due to the errors in the OS with misreporting the amount of RAM and the memory leakage issue within ME. Try replacing the file first. This could very well me a quick fix for you.

Maybe not but in this case, replacing the memory has made a huge difference. I now have Win98SE up and running plus have installed several of my other programs. I still don't have sound working and it doesn't find my modem yet. I still have a lot of work to do before I am satisfied.
