I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 running Vista Home Premium that was recently updated to SP1. After the update, the computer restarted, and during the boot sequence it went to a black screen that scrolled through a bunch of files stopping on "!! 0xc0190036 !! 3911/99879 (JNWDRV.dll)". I opened a command promt using Windows RE and renamed JNWDRV.dll to JNWDRV.dll.old. Rebooted, and it then stopped on jnwdui.dll file with the same error. I renamed that one as well. The third time it stopped on mxdwdui.dll (with the same error), but once I renamed it it still gives the error when trying to boot. I'm assuming something went wrong with the update and some of my .dll files are corrupted, but why is it still giving me the error after I rename it? Has anybody ever come across this? Thanks.

The possibility exists that Windows is rebuilding the libraries every time it starts.

Do you have any Restore Points available?

Tried system restore, it goes through the motions then gets to 'finalizing restore' and won't go past that (I left it overnight, didn't finish).

That ain't good. How about the Windows disk or an image on another drive or disk?

I have a Vista disc (that's how I was getting to the command prompt to rename the files), can I put the pre-update .dll files back into the registry using it?

    Certainly worth a try.

If that doesn't work, you know the drill: start thinking about salvaging any important data and reinstalling Windows, either by repair install or a format/install.

Indeed.... I'm trying to avoid that if at all possible, but it's starting to look like that's the direction we're headed in.
