On the front page today is a new download under Graphics for required DLL's and downloadable from: http://majorgeeks.com/download4549.html

I downloaded these and compared the sizes and product version numbers with the ones that I already have on Windows 98 and notice differences - see below. The MSVCRT DLL's are a part of different versions of the MS Visual C++ (MS VC++) run-time libraries. My question is:

    Are these differences significant?

    My Versions:

    msvcrt.dll 272KB 6.00.9782.0
    msvcrt10.dll Doesn't exist
    msvcrt20.dll 268KB 2.10.000
    msvcrt40.dll 63.5KB 4.20.6172
    plugin.dll 244KB 10.0.1

All msvcrt DLL's are in C:\Windows\System and the PLUGIN.DLL is a part of Macromedia Flash in its directory.

    MG Versions:

    msvcrt.dll 288KB 6.10.8637.0
    msvcrt10.dll 206KB N/A
    msvcrt20.dll 248KB 2.10.000
    msvcrt40.dll 319KB 4.10.6038
    plugin.dll 32KB 4.0

This PLUGIN.DLL appears to a part of Adobe PSP.

It is sometimes the case that one or more of the DLL's are present having been installed with other programs and as long as you have all 5 of them in the designated folders for your OS the plug-ins, etc. will work fine. More often though, one or more of these DLL's are not present or not in the designated folder for your specific OS which will cause program enhancements (plug-ins, filters and other add-ons) to fail. I believe I stated in the read-me that the dll's are needed when/if you get an error message saying the plug-in can't be loaded AND after you have installed it and restarted the graphics program.

The plugin dll (if not already installed in the proper folder for the OS) is critical for plug-in support, as are the others for various add-ons. While many graphics programs support the thousands of plug-ins out there they are not always fully equipped on a new install to handle them. Paint Shop Pro, & Irfanview for example will support Photoshop plug-ins with just a basic install but not all of them will work due to missing or misplaced dll's. These add-ins while clearly stated they will work in a slew of graphics programs the frustrating reality is they won't work without the proper dll's.

If you have a newer version of any of the dll's already installed in the OS specific folder as outlined in the read-me then common sense would tell you that you won't need to place that particular dll. However if you don't have all 5 of them (which is extremely common) you will find a multitude of things that won't work.
