Ok I heard that one can speed up his computer by enabling the DMA. Is this ok to do? I have 98se and I'm just tryin to make this machine run faster with some tweaks before I try overclocking. Thank you.

DMA helps speed hard drive access, and if drives are capible, then sure go for it.

Ah---so that explains the message box I get stating that I should contact the manufacturer to see if I can do this. Thanks for the info and I'll post when I find out how this works out.

Direct Memory Access (DMA) is also called bus mastering is a meams for devices to transfer data without involving the central processor thus freeing it for other tasks. CD and hard drives with the electronics to take advantage of this can improve overall system performance this way.
If your CD and/or hard drive can operate DMA you should enable them. There will be a checkbox in the device properties if this is possible I.e. Win98 will tell you, you do not need to contact manufacturers.

    start>setings>controlpanel>devicemanager>expand the cd and diskdrives
Highlight a drive> chooseproperties>settings.tick the DMA box if not greyed out.
