Hello forum. I was just wondering if you could help me with a problem I am having with Internet Explorer (IE) on my home desktop. Whenever I type in a web address other than about:blank, I get the "this page cannot be displayed" page and this message at the bottom of the page: res://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCLC.DLL/dnserror.htm... (it appears and disappears quickly). This happens whether I am using a wired or a wireless connection.

I loaded Mozilla Firefox on the desktop as well and got the same results. I also get the same results on a work laptop I brought home to investigate the problem, however I can access the Internet via my main work laptop while at home (VPN or no VPN, it does not make a difference).

I am currently running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 on all machines tested and have Verizon FiOS. Any help is greatly appreciated as I have been trying to solve this issue for about a month now. Thanks.

i'm probably your best bet for this. i was a supervisor at the Charleston Fiber Solution Center. I know many FiOS issues in and out.

as for your issue, with DNS errors (be it on FiOS or any other service), the first thing to do is to clear the dns resolver cache.

on the machine getting the error, do the following:

    start - run - cmd

you'll see the dos command window come up.

    type in the following command:

    ipconfig /flushdns

you should then see a message in the dos window akin to "dns resolver cache successfully flushed"

reboot the machine (just in case something was loaded into ram and not cleared by the flush of the file on the hd)

it should work. if not, lemme know

No luck. In fact, I am pretty sure the FiOS support had me do this already once. Any other suggestions? Could this be an issue with my Actiontec router? Overall, I am pretty IT savy, but this issue has confounded me to no end.

    Hi

Do you have any software firewalls other than the built in windows one installed, disable and test connection.

I would check router and turn it off for a few mins then back on, also check routers settings for your ISP for being correct, maybe a setting wrong.

I have tested the Firewall issue and that is not the issue. I have also reset the router at least twice without any luck. How would I determine the appropriate router settings?
