DNS Lookup problem

I need to manually map an external ip to a name.

My internal network is named lets say john.org
I need to get my computers on the internal network to go to www.john.org
They are looking for this address internally. What steps do I need to take on the PDC to allow users on the internal network reach www.john.org ?

I believe that if you use DHCP, the DHCP server can issue a domain name as part of the info that it sends to a DHCP request.

 

Can you type the IP of www.john.org into the address bar and get the page?

*usually* http://www.john.org will be looked for outside the local network, supposedly because of the 'www' prefix.

 

You could use a HOSTS file which will over ride the DNS.

You could then have your login script for the domain to update all of the users HOSTS file when the login.

 

Ok still looking for an answer on this one.

I am unable to type www.john.org to get to the site because the internal DNS is trying to resolve it locally and failing.

I would rather not use a hosts file to as I would then have to populate that hosts file to all computers on the network.

I think I need to setup a forward lookup zone address on the primary domain controller but I am unsure where to begin. I have tried but none of my attempts resolves correctly.

I need www.john.org to resolve to 200.200.200.200

 

Does 200.200.200.200 when typed in - go to john.org on your PC?
Did you try dropping the www & use http://john.org
Is this an intranet your setting up?
