I have Windows XP. Whenever I type "ipconfig /flushdns" I get "Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during execution." I have ran both anti-spyware and Anti-virus and my computer is supposedly clean of any virus/spyware. Any help would be appreciated!!

I have had problems uploading and flushing the DNS resolver was an answer to this problem on another site. Even if it does not work, I would like to know what is causing this error and/or how to fix it.

    I am not a techno!

Many thanks to anyone that can offer dome advice.

thank you for taking the time to read this!:)

If you feel confident about editing the registry try this

    Open the Registry Editor
    start>run>typein
    regedit

Select the my computer icon at the top
    Choose file>export>all
choose filename and location (filecould be 20MB+)
    Click save
You have just backed up the registry.

Now open the tree to Hkey_Local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\DNScache\paramters

In the right hand pane choose MaxCacheEntryTt1limit
Right click and choose modify it should be 00015180 hex or 86400 decimal
(note and post the value in the thread)
    Set to 10 decimal
    Click OK
    Exit regedit
    Restart computer

reopen regedit and reset value to 86400 decimal.
    close and restart computer.

    This should clear your cache.

let us know how you get on

Do you run a Firewall other than the default Windows firewall?

Some of the Firewalls have their own DNS Caching apps. If your DNS is monitored by another firewall you can control it from the UI of the Firewall.

first try reseting the tcp/ip stack
    start run, cmd then ok.
then netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
    then netsh winsock reset
    then reboot
then try the ipconfig /flush dns
hopfully after reseting the dns it should work.

Tried that then got the following message after netsh winsock reset :

"Unable to reset the Winsock Catalog.
A system call that should never fail has failed"

I even bought a new laptop as I thought that might be the problem.....

Thank you for trying, hope this doesn't mean there'r nothing I can do..

    Thanks Colemanguy

Just wish I was more PC savvy.....

You bought a new laptop and get the same err? Thats interesting, never have I had that winsock command fail. It failing i bet means the tcp/ip stack is seriously messed up. At this point i really think it may be time to back up your data and reformat. I can't think of anything else to do if that command fails.

I use Zone Alarm version 7.0.302.000. Can't find anything on the UI.

    I have very limited knowledge...

    Thank you birdbath

Thanks studiot, I'll try that at the weekend when I have more time to mess about and print this topic to get it right.
Just one thing, you said "Now open the tree to Hkey_Local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\DNScache\paramters
" How and where do I open the tree? (WFWG was so much easier...lol)

If all else fails...reformat. Could any of this be to do with getting a new router from my ISP?? I only wonder because it was shortly after that problem seemed to happen. (ISP provider is BT Yahoo and router is the new "Home Hub")

Thank you all for taking the time to try to help me, frustration was driving me mad as I should have just asked you experts at the start....

    Again, thank you!:)

Very unlikely a new router would do that. Espcially with the failure to reset the winsock, which should not fail at all. I believe you have bigger problems.

Would a reformat be better? The laptop I have has a partition on the hard drive with all the basic programs that came with the PC. There is a startup function that reformats the main partition and then installs the software. Should I use that?
And last but not least, as I'm not that technically minded, what can be the "bigger problems"? Hardware or software?

    Thank you!

My post was a response to your original request. It will only allow you to flush your DNS cache, nothing more. I wasn't sure that it would resolve your problems, but it answered the question. There are a lot of good geeks prepared to help you here so keep posting. It would be useful if you could post a summary of the actual original problems that caused yo uto want to flush the DNS cache.

To help you with any registry editing it may come to. The registry editor looks a bit like windows explorer with two panes. In the left pane is the 'tree' structure you manipulate in the same way as the directory tree in explorer. That is you click on the little box with a cross to the left of an entry to expand that entry. When you get to the tip of the branch you will see data appear in the right hand pane about that particular registry entry.
THERE IS NO UNDO BUTTON IN REGEDIT which is why you should always back up the registry before you change anything, just viewing doesn't make changes.
I see you are online now, I won't be back untill this afternoon
    Hope this helps
