DNS troubles

Way back a few months ago, I installed something called TreewalkDNS. What that does is that it puts a DNS on localhost or something like that. I'm not entirely sure. However, it only worked for a couple days before just cutting me off and never working again. Then, I uninstalled it. I am currently in France, but I've got the same problem in Canada.

I also know that this is a DNS problem because whenever this happens and I do a troubleshoot on Windows Live Messenger, I get the DNS highlighted as having a problem. I will also attach a Windows network diagnostic dialog box's text. In particular, the very first item in the box states the problem.

My internet would work on and off for the next little while, having the DNS die on me every hour or so. I could fix it using an ipconfig release and renew.

I have checked my DNS settings on my network adapter, and also on my router. Everything has been changed back to the default settings.

Does anybody know anything about TreewalkDNS? As in, does anybody know if it has probably left some residual junk on my computer that is messing up my DNS settings?

Hi there EEEEdiot have you tried flushing your DNS like so :

    C:\>ipconfig /flushdns
    Windows IP Configuration
Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

The above command will completely flush the DNS, deleting any incorrect entries too. You can also use the command ipconfig /displaydns to view the DNS resolver cache.

Try this it may help solve some of your problems !!!!

    Rusty ;)

I have done flushdns. In fact, I use that every time I release and renew the ip address as well.

What do I do with what I see on the DNS resolver cache? Right now, everything seems right.

I have actually tried that already. Unfortunately, it doesn't work.

Have you checked in services.msc and see if your DNS settings are correct ?

Click Winkey + R type in:

    cmd (press enteR)

    now type in:

    ipconfig /all > ip & notepad ip

This should bring up notepad with the results of ipconfig. Attach here.

Here is a copy of ipconfig. I want to clarify that there is nothing wrong at this moment.

I know some of the MG's don't like us referring people to other sites, but, i think in your case if you need to check all your services are right, there's a site called www.blackviper.com you can check all your service settings there to make sure they're correct !

    Hope this helps !

I don't see a link there... did you post it?

    I personally use opendns.

    http://www.opendns.com/

No issues at all. My guess that your DNS server is having issues.

The thing is, I want to return everything to the default settings.

I think it's something local, because I have this problem in Canada AND in France.

Yes but if the link is not showing just type it in http://www.blackviper.com ! ;)

P.S if you read the site carefully you can see the default settings in there !

Yes, I've read the entry for DNS Client.

All of the settings seem to be correct (as in all the settings on the properties pages).
Are there any other services that I should be looking at?

Also, do you think this might have something to do with my registry?

This is your current DNS settings:
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 89.2.0.1

Did you add that? Is it set to acquire the IP and DNS settings automatically?

Everything is set to automatic at the moment.
I might want to mention that I've also once used a tool to scan through different DNS servers to find which one was the fastest. I would then put that ip address in the DNS server field. However, I have since stopped doing that, and everything is now automatic.

I have also taken an additional screenshot of the DNS tab for the advanced properties page of a my network adapter.

EDIT: the picture doesn't seem to be showing in the attached thumbnails box. The box is there, but there are no thumbnails in it. Maybe it's me, but is there another way to get the picture up? I notice that majorgeeks seems to delete links, so I don't think a photo hosting site would work.

PS. Thanks for all your guys' help.
