Dns/url/ip... Help

I am all confused... I do not know if this is the right place to post my question, but I am sure I will find help somewhere here. I have my own business and I was hosting my emails with a company (company1) and decided to change to another company (company2). I called company2 and payd for the servide and they said in 72 hrs. my mails would be pointing to their server. 72 hrs have passed and I called company2 for the nth time and they said that the problem was that my mails were still being hosted by company1 that company1 was the responsible for pointing the mails to them. Now I do not know what is going on because I has called company2 before and they said that i had to wait that the change took up to 72 hrs. What is the difference between hosting my mails and hosting mu DNS? And what part does NIC have here, if any at all? Can someone please explain all this hosting stuff?

 

your domain record needs to be modified. your domain is the name after the @ sign in your email address. the domain has a zone file associated with it. in this zone file you have records. each record point a service to an ip. you have a cname, a, mx, and others. what you need to change is the mx record and have it point to the mail server of the new company. it is a pain. if you did not reg. your domain you may not have access to change the record. go to dnsstuff.com type in the domain name in the who is box and see who owns the domain. it will also tell you who the registrar is. (godaddy, network solutions, etc.)
