You too can find out it was a prank. Of course all antivirus and antispyware were aware of it going back to November I believe.

    Good afternoon.;)

I have to go clean a computer this weekend that has conficker, among other things. rolleyes If I hadn't gotten so sick I woulda had it done when I was there before but the XP puter had only 256 mb ram so it was EXTREMELY slow going. *THUD* On the plus side, it has a gig now so it shouldn't take me as long.:)

Can we assume that all security programmes and Windows were updated?

Ha! Not a chance. They hadn't even installed SP2 yet, don't use a firewall despite the security center constantly telling them too. AVG has been seriously corrupted...doesn't show up in add remove progs but all the files are there. Can't download anything that has to do with malware removal cuz the browser closes as soon as you click on a download link. Thankfully I had put everything I needed on a flash drive and took it with me, but AVG for example when they try to install the new version they get a quick window that comes up and closes and quickly as it appeared. Install halted.

Should be a *cough* fun job.

Hey Abby, if you have the extra hardware, you might consider pulling the sick computer's drive and scan it from another PC. Seems to work well for me and is quicker. Not even SP2?:confused You should change some of the Windows sounds to Homer sayings... :-D

Hmm, darn tough to type that properly as it's very easy for thick fingered jerks like me to mistype it.

I still say, keep your box updated. Sure, crap happens as it always will but I'm OK.:)

Conficker is unpredictable in action, but it does turn off many AV programs and restrict internet access.

As such it could be prudent to download a suitable tool before conficker action. Use might then get you back online. If this happens you you still then go to the MG cleaning proceedure afterwards.
