New to this great forum, so g'day to all members:D .

My OS is Windows XP Home.

    I currently use:
    Trend Pc-cillin 2002(came with system)-with firewall enabled,
    Kerio personal firewall,
    XP firewall enabled,
    Spybot S&D 1.2,
    Ad-Aware 6.0,
Norton Ghost 2003 with second removable Hard Drive just in case ;) .

Do I have a good set-up? Any suggestions?

Speaking of which, how do I turn off the XP firewall? How do I find out if it is doing anything? I sure haven't gotten any notices from it except once in a while something won't download the first time. How do I monitor the firewall?

    Thanks for the reply!

    Go to Control Panel,
    Network and Internet Connections,
    Internet Options,
    Connections,
    Settings,
    Properties,
    Advanced.
Untick or tick to turn off/on the built in firewall ;) .

By the way ' flessa,' to see the logs in the XP firewall, you first must enable them. How you may ask?
Well the same steps as before, but after ' Advanced ' go into settings and enable :D.

hmmm... turns out the firewall setting wasn't ticked to start with. That might explain why I haven't been getting anything from it. I left it unticked. I did change another setting while I was in there tho. For some reason it wanted to dial up my ISP any time there was no connection present. I changed it to always dial my default ISP.

There is still so much to explore with this new OS And I still want to get both of our computers networked so that we can both surf the net at the same time with only one phoneline.

I got those two Linksys HPNA cards last week and pulled the booklet out of one of the boxes. I read the whole thing and now I'm not sure that is the way to go. It seems I will need two phone jacks in the room with the main computer in order to use them. Needless to say, that ain't going to happen.

I am thinking of putting the two cards up on ebay and going with LAN/ethernet, maybe even wireless? who knows. While I was at the doctors office yesterday, I happened to see a copy of PCWorld that had an article about home networking. Wouldn't you just know that April copy is no longer available on the newstand!

Kind of overkill don't ya think? 3 firewalls running could cause some problems. I'd nix the XP Firewall and use either the PC-Cillin or Kerio but not both at the same time. I personally use Kerio and think it's a great piece of software. If you want that extra security, I'd recommend a NAT device.. some hardware firewall.

And WELCOME TO MAJOR GEEKS :D

well because of Kerio's low level nature it probably wouldnt cause too many problems with the others, but it depends on their working also. if it were me id disable pc-cillin and just use it purley as a AV program.

As for the networking thing, you want to internet share, correct? well, if you have one computer which dials out the connection, and that is connected to the hub/switch then you should be able to get onto the internet with the rest of the computer on the network. you only need one modem connected. needless to say you will probably have a very slow connection, since you are on 56k modem. you will need to Bridge the connections to give the network access to the net, if you get that far then post it on the networking forum, if its a problem.

First of all thanks for the welcome:).

Have never had any conflicts or problems(one of those rare lucky ones I guess).

Could you please answer some questions for me?

1.I have been using Kerio in learning mode, should I enable ' deny unknown ' after my rules have been created or, leave as is?
2.Have or do you use the beta versions and are they stable?
    3.Any improvements in beta versions?

    Many thanks,
    Jabman;).

HI, I use Agnitum Outpost Firewall they are adamant to only use one firewall or it can cause conflicts.

The way I read it that this applies to all firewall not just their own.

I visit their forum and the use of more than one does create quite a few posts for help. Peace Mal

I've used one beta version. No problems with it. was an earlier version though.
I'd leave it in learning mode and I like to see who's trying to connect to me. But that's my preference.
