    Hey.

Just got this Athlon 1400 from a friend who has upgraded.. I have a few questions about it. I'm running win2k pro. (i formatted and installed a new version, he was running XP)

Windows hasn't automatically detected a sound card.. When i go into Device Manager there are !'s in front of Multimedia Audio Controller, and PCI Device. When i select them and go into Properties, it says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)" I try to reinstall the drivers, but it can't find them on the computer and i don't have the disk.

The thing is, he might have taken out the sound card to give to a friend. Is there a way of telling if there actually is one plugged in? and if so, what model and make it is?

Also, isn't there going to be one built into the mobo? Can i activate that?

    Thanks,

    M

I think if you don't see any audio jacks on the back of the machine anywhere, you don't have a sound card. If you do, you just need to find the drivers for it.

I see audio jacks, but they connect direct into the mobo. You say i need to install drivers, but how do i know which ones to install?

you will need to find out what motherboard you have and then goto the manufacturer's website and download the drivers.

First thing you need to do is figure out what motherboard you have.

    1. Download and install Everest Home Edition
    2. Run Everest. In the left pane, browse to the location in the picture below -- /Motherboard/Motherboard -- and look in the right pane at the Motherboard name (you might need it later).

    3. Browse to the /Motherboard/Chipset section of Everest (below the /Motherboard/Motherboard/ section in the left pane of the pic). In the right pane, take note of the Chipset name (again, you might need it later).

    4. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the right pane, and look for the link to Driver Download. Use the name of the chipset and the name of the motherboard to find the correct chipset drivers.

9 times out of 10, the chipset drivers for onboard audio are packaged with a number of other drivers (such as the IDE and AGP drivers) that should further increase performance overthe generic default Windows drivers. Install the drivers, reboot, and check Windows Device Manager for any other unknown devices.
