So I made a thread because my desktop computer is down and out for the count
newbie 1st thread stuck on log in Windows XP

I'll add in, I know absolutely crap about computers, as you might be able to ascertain:
    problem is everything freezes now

I am using a computer 2002 laptop with XP Pro
    service pack 2
    Pentium 4 CPU 2.4Gz
    2.39GH, 448MB of RAM
    my internet speed is
Download Speed: 1337 kbps (167.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 327 kbps (40.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

when I play online games at pogo.com(chess, etc) the site makes me use pop-ups and the computer slows way down and freezes and eventually, after I hit alt-control-delete and close windows a bunch of times on my Task Manager, everything closes.
I like to use my tabs to have different sites open, like 8 or so
    I am using IE8

do I need a new computer? more ram? a program from this site to make things better?

RAM and a fresh install of xp wouldnt hurt if its from 02. your system is outdated, but you can get by with maybe a gig of RAM as an upgrade to your system if you dont want to buy a new computer.

RAM! I run windows 2000; my computers are older and slower than yours and I have 1 GB Ram in each.
Have you cleaned up the computer? If not, grab a copy of CCleaner and let it clean up the outdated and broken links.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
    then after that defrag.

I don't play games at pogo, but it still looks like a very powerful computer.

Have you gone to the malware forum and see if your computer is infected.

I did get CC cleaner, use it at least 4x times/day
and I defragged the other day,
I'm not what CCcleaner does to clean up broken/outdatedlinks.
I start it up, hit ANALYZE
then it shows whatever needs to be deleted and I hit run cleaner
what I am not sure about getting around is how if Im logged on to a site, like this forum, how do I stop from needing to always retype my password/username? Is getting one of those programs that autofills worth it?

CCleaner is not intended to clean out malware.

That PC is fine and not everyone can afford a new PC, however getting a new PC does not also rule out the risk of freezing like the OP has reported.

I would remove IE8 as its a beta and some websites are not setup to display properly in it, also some add-ons like Adobe Flash, Shockwave and Java can cause issues with online game websites locking up.

So my advice not already done, which I think you already have done, is to remove IE8 and go back to IE7 and them install the updated Flash and Java

    Flash

    Java
    http://majorgeeks.com/Sun_Java_Runtime_Environment_d4648.html

Do use this free app JavaRa to remove all older verions of Java on your PC as they can affect performance too.

Although with only 512mb of ram and some used up by your likely onboard graphics card, you may need to open less windows and tabs in IE as likely your using up all your available ram, TBH 1GB of ram is ideal to run XP.

Ok I got back on my desktop, but wonder if I need to do something to make it faster
    I'd appreciate thoughts
    It's
    Compaq Presario
    Intell
    Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz
    3.2Ghz 1.00 GB of RAM

    Runing
    Mircosoft windows XP
    version 2002
    Service pack 3

I use it for playing games at pogo.com
and surfing the net and school-related crap online
    THanks

    I disagree

    Many people can

The OP was asking for opinions, I shared mine. I dont see why you felt the need to essentially say that my post was "wrong".

1GB is alright, but upping it to 2 might be beneficial in the long run. Two 1GB sticks would work out for you probably.

on top of just keeping it clean of course.

Start by leaving IE alone. Install Opera -- it'll remember your passwords if you want it to, regardless of whether the website offers that option. It also does a far better job of auto-fill than IE ever thought of. It's also less vulnerable to exploits than IE.

Opera is free. You'll find more info here.

    Firefox is far better still.

You're entitled to your opinion, of course, especially if you have used both Firefox and Opera for any length of time. I can't make that claim.

But as far as I can see, they're about equal. I've looked at Firefox's feature set, and I haven't seen anything there that would persuade me to dump Opera. But the point is that both are far better than IE, which is decidedly lame by comparison with either.

I should be able to help with this one in IE right click on IE>click the content tab>come down to autocomplete> click settings >then check the tabs you want.
