Do I need UEFI?

So I have a Gigabyte 990xa-ud3 motherboard, and I just got a 3 TB Western Digital harddrive (model# WD30ezrx) for a Christmas present (yes, my wife is that awesome). I used Acronis True Image 2013 to transfer windows 8 to my new HD but the maximum partition size it would allow is 2 TB. That made 1/3 of my hd made inaccessible, that's a hell of a shortfall. I've been looking all morning for a possible solution to this, but so far all I can find is guides to switch from BIOS to UEFI, which seems a bit over the top to me. So I guess my 4 primary questions are as follows.

    1. Is there a better work around that doesnt involve downloading a crapload of utility software?
    2. Do I really need UEFI, and does my motherboard even support it?
    3. If there is NOT a better work around, and the board does support UEFI, then how in the hell do I do that.
    4. Whether I use UEFI or a work around, will this make my entire HD a single 3 TB partition, or will I have to split it up?

To be clear, I have no idea what UEFI is, is it a driver, or is it a replacement for BIOS? I'd rather not flash BIOS if I dont have to, I've never done it before and I really don't like the idea of possibly ruining my PC over it.

    Greetings, souredspirit...

Not going to get into the UEFI controversy - frankly, I don't think anyone knows enough about it yet to really have a fruitful conversation about it.

That being said, I will point you to a recent thread here that brought out some salient points - agree or disagree, the meat is on the table...;)

You don't really choose to switch to UEFI it comes with the newest motherboards it is not something you download.

Now, I think the maximum partition size for BIOS to boot is 2tb. The other space on the HD should be accessible as a data partition. So you should be able to go to Disk Management and create another partition from the unallocated space. Format it then use it for your large files that don't need to be on the Windows drive.
