Do I need wireless adapter or router?

    Lightning killed my dsl modem and the integrated n.i.c. in my desktop. I have a new modem. Formerly the modem was interconnected with a Netgear wireless router, and everything worked fine. Do I need a wireless adapter since my router cannot connect to the n.i.c., or can I just connect the modem straight to the router?
