Oracle is releasing their critical updates on the 15th of this month. I would say that someone pissed someone off at the Obama administration.

I have always had Java and religiously kept it up to date. After reading about the alleged vulnerability, I disabled it. To my surprise, none of the websites I routinely visit even use it. If I go to one that does, I can easily enable it again.

Reboot hasn't helped - setting Click to play in Chrome doesn't appear to work.

    Hi, Earthling...

Any way you can tell what Java version your Chrome is using? Just interested...

That ain't good. You might check your Java control panel applet to see if there's a provision to disable under the 'Security' tab, but I think that option is only available with update 10.

I've deleted all versions of Java on all of our machines until further notice.

How about disabling JAVA SCRIPTS in browsers? Is that also necessary?

Same here on four systems. I don't think I would have known about this but for MG. Must get out more :-D

Just to be absolutely clear about this, most advice I have seen suggests disabling Java in browsers, which some users might not be too sure how to do. However I chose to uninstall the Jave Runtime Environment in Control Panel > Add/Remove. Can someone confirm that that will do it for ALL installed browsers?

OK, I'll confirm it, uninstalling via Control Panel totally disables Java in all browsers and is the easy, surefire way to be certain you are no longer vulnerable.

Sorry my article cleared it up ""Oracle Java 7 update 10 and earlier are affected," the notice says. It adds that the only known solution is to "disable Java in web browsers.""

If you want to be secure, pull the plug. Otherwise everything on your computer, including Windows, has vulnerabilities. Safe surfing and updating makes it a non issue.

Java is a tough one. If you don't need it, don't bother. If you do, make sure auto update is on.

Its fine to have it installed for local programs. Probably not a good idea to have it enabled in your browser.

You can have it installed in your browser but not your computer?

    You have it switched around.

You can have it installed on your computer, but disabled in your browser.
