Do Registry Edits Cause Problems With XP?

    I'm using a registry edit found at this website that allows you to increase the view that the XP Windows Explorer screen can remember to 8,000.

    I'll be doing a new format soon and I'm wondering if I should even be using a registry edit like this. Does it have adverse effects on the OS?

    No adverse effects.

    No need to do it either, unless the problem of Explorer not remembering settings effects you.

    Well, in a way. I have certain folders that need to be the "List" view, some that need to be the "Thumbnails" view, and so on...

    It's a lot of trouble configuring all the different folders and then the OS suddenly decides not to save them. It can be frustrating.

    I was just hoping this might have been something Microsoft has addressed.

    Speaking of which, does any happen to know what the default view count is without the reg edit for Windows XP that's been update to SP2?

    No not addressed still in Vista for now although Vista remembers 5000, but back to XP, defaulty it remembers 400, that reghack will adjust the BagMRU figure which will allow XP to remember more... basically this which Microsoft mention in this KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813711

    Can also be adjusted via the TweakUI component for Powertoys for XP http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=710 once installed and run click Explorer > Customizations then enter the figure of folders to remember.


    I will mention that its wise to backup your registry before doing any changes as the registry is a core component of the OS and if you mess anything up your PC will likely in worst case not boot, which is why its best to let applications like TweakUI handle any tweaks.
