    Hi guys and gals,

I am 28 years old and I am currently back in school, training to be an IT Specialist. Right now, I am finishing the A+ cert. program and once done, I will be moving on to net+, security+, Cisco CCENT, Cisco CCNA, and Mobile Electronics. When I'm finished with school (about 10 more months) I will be certified in all fields listed above.

My ultimate goal is to be able to work remotely, from home. possibly tech support, but I am certainly open to anything at this point.

What I would like to know is, does anyone know of any companies that provide remote jobs (from home) that would be willing to hire someone like me? Since I have little experience, I don't expect an impressive salary. I'm more interested in "jumping in" as soon as possible, while also being able to cover my bills. that way I can "learn while I learn" and effectively strenghthen my abilities while also growing (in knowledge/ability) all the while.

Thanks (in advance) for taking the time to read this! Any and All help will be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks again,
    Chip

It all depends. If youre going for your ccna, youre obviously trying to get into network engineering, so depending on what kind of company you get hired at, you might be able to work something out with your boss. Everyone i know that has their na/np works on site though and are often on call when theyre not on site.

Im a network admin right now and studying for my na. 85% of my job could probably be done from home with logmein, but im still required to be on site since i do helpdesk too. Even at one company im looking at that provides server/network tech support requires people to be on site or at the customers site when needed.

I wouldnt expect to be working from home starting out unless youre a web developer or programmer or something.

What about something simple while I'm still in school? like the people who help configure routers over the phone? how do I find jobs like that? are they even remote?

Thats helpdesk too. Only thing you can do is look around in your area, or wherever youre willing to go and ask the interviewer if it would be possible. Not sure what your circumstances are, but you'll have to explain that to an employer.
Keep in mind you might be doing other things than just configuring ip addresses on router interfaces when youre starting out.

    Excelent, thank you!

Now, if I could find somebody in the Tampa area! (I don't mind being "on site", but I really want to try and find a career where I can eventually work strictly/mostly from home........just tired of working in close proximity to misreable people and never being home.)

Youll want to focus primarily, if not only, on network engineering or some kind of programming if you hope to work remotely at some point. i cant help you out much with that since i do mostly server administration and IT helpdesk. You might not like what i do if you dont like working with other people, most of whom are not tech savvy at all. this is a purely customer service field that i work in. everything i do is for the people using the network. if i do something for myself here, its to help me help the user.

I think youre really going to have to think about the career path you want to take. IT is customer service which is definitely something i had to work on when i started out, and im still working on it... it might not be very easy to find something that only focuses on routing and switching right away, let alone doing that from home.

just have to keep studying, ccna isnt exactly the easiest exam in the world. Just dont give up on it. you need an 825 to pass. the first time i took it i got a 600.(i just went in not very prepared to see what i was in for.) second time i got a 700, so im making progress. I hope to have my ccna by the end of this year :) itll probably be on to the mcse after that.

Well, my customer service skills are awesome (Bartender and server all my life) and I don't mind working with/for end users (it's easy IMO to work with people who are coming to me for help), I just can't stand lazy, misreable coworkers (which there are a lot of in the restaurant business) who really have no need to interact with me, but the still work in close proximity.

Network Engineer huh? I'll have to look into that. thanks again!
