Microsoft gave a 90 day warranty out of the box. Tell me they didnt know about problems beforehand.

Yeah, right. You can tell which products are crap by whether or not the company stands behind the product.

Who's surprised? The first Xbox has the power cord issue. Big recall, they didn't want people's houses burning down. There are at least 6 revisions of the hardware, as well.

i am just soooooo glad i did not fall to the temptation to buy this cr*p!!!

i have had conversations before about the pros and cons of providing ones children with hundreds of dollars worth of micro technology, just so they can play a jazzed up version of 'pong'.

it makes me angry that those that have succumbed to the pressure of 'the greatest and latest' are being ripped off so blatantly. 90 days warranty on some thing that costs $500??? you have gotta be sh*tt*ng me!!!

i dont know who i am more angry at. the idiots that make this stuff, or the idiots that buy it.

Not much consolation for the myriads of duped customers prior to this though :/

Making it retroactive would be the step in the direction of doing the 'right' thing.

    I'll stick to Freecell . :D

Seeing if I can beat my record of 49 cards out in the last move. :major
Don't believe it is possible to get more than 49, as the aces and two's go out automatically. ;) Bazza

Yes, I do. And I actually paid for those extra years, even though it has only failed once. You bastards.

Oh, and as for "doing the right thing", does anyone seriously think it's coincidence that this happens just as the one of the most anticipated exclusive PS3 titles hits the market?

    I didn't think so.

I doubt one title can save the PS3, and Microsoft knows this. They are scared of the Wii, figuratively speaking.

Had no issues with mine - and I picked up a premium console with 3 games, 2 wireless controllers for £280 :)

The Wii aims for a completely different target market than the 360 though... At least according to what Nintendo has stated. If it was trying to compete with the 360, wouldn't it at least be HD-capable? So the area were the Wii competes with the 360 is when it comes to recruiting new customers, people that were not gamers previously, casual gamers, and so on... the PS3 and the 360 on the other hand, they go for the exact same people.

I also doubt that the PS3 can't be saved, is doomed, and so on. I think it's too early to say anything either way yet. The 360 didn't do any better in its first months than the PS3 is now, and yet it was the first next-gen console available, it was anticipated, hyped, and yet it still didn't a large number of games lined up when it was released. A year from now we'll probably be able to say for certain whether the PS3 is going to be a success or a failure, but it is still too early to tell.

Im not sure how to respond--different audiences? console gamers are console gamers. Nintendo did state they were concentrating more on fun and keeping the price down(hence no HD capability), than pretty things, and in that way, they succeeded.

But console gamers is not a generic group.

First there are the ones like me, who preorder so much the employees in the local store know me by last name and phone number now. A couple of months ago they were kind enough to put aside a used game that came in, that I was in asking about the day before, and the next time I came in (later the same week), they told me they had a copy now if I still was interested. Of course I was, and I was very grateful.

I have accounts on gaming review sites, I buy three to five games per month, and I love them. They are my main hobby and my primary source of entertainment, especially now that NBA season is over. I a member of the smallest group, referred to as "hardcore gamers". We spend more money on games than all the others put together, and we are the ones that Microsoft and Sony want to cater to and sell to with their latest consoles. This group plays everything, and is almost certainly the only one to by M-rated games and shooter games. We spend hours and hours in the multi-player mode in Xbox live, shooting each other, and loving every minute of it.

Second, there is what is referred to as "avid gamers" or "mass market gamers". This group buys maybe two games per month, and tends to play primarily sports games and racing games, the ones that don't require you to commit huge chunks of time to make progress. Tony Hawk's and Madden are the favorites in this group, as well as The Sims franchise.

Third and last, we have the kids gamers. Kids below 12 are considered a demographic on it's own, and there are games released specifically for them.

The Wii has been selling to the second and third group, where it is a great success. The Wii sports you get with it, as well as the Tiger Woods golf game, and others work very well with it, and for the casual gamer, that does it as a social activity, it is great. However, for the smallest but mostspendy group, the hardcore gamer, the Wii does not offer neraly as powerful hardware as the other two. The PS3 and 360 are both capable of absolutely stunning graphis on a TV capable of pure 1080p, and the surround sound from them both makes games like Resident Evil 4 or Gears of War even even more amazing. I can actually hear the enemies behind me now. Wow.

The Wii has not sold nearly as well to hardcore console gamers as it has to the other two, and to first-time gamers who never owned a console until now. That is the Wii's success, that it has tapped into a previously unexplored market, and it is succeeding there. However, the core market, the ones who wait to see the reviews for both the 360 version and the PS3 version of The Darkness, and then buys the one that had the best graphics, are not nearly as likely to buy a Wii.

That's what I meant when I said that Nintendo and Microsoft are targeting different parts of the market -- different kinds of console gamers. Nintendo are keeping it fun and affordable, Microsoft and Sony will charge you more, but give you more raw power for your money. And for my copy of God of War III, I want a 1080p capable machine.

I agree that the Wii is targeted towards different "gamers". Just look at the games on the Wii vs. the PS3, Sony doesn't make all that many kids games.

I just wish their were more 1080P games out for the PS3.

At the end of the day, its revenue that will matter more than types of games they cater to.

Who is losing money vs who is making money? Last I saw, Nintendo is making it, and Sony is still playing catch up due to hardware costs, same as Microsoft.

But the type of gamers you sell to is connected to your revenue. The casual PC gamer that is happy with The Sims and nothing else, is not the target of game ad-campaigns. The avid and hardcore gamers who buy games, accessories, and more games and accessories, are the ones who create the gaming publishers' revenue, and because they spend so much money, they are the most common target market for console game developers.

And that's why I think it's too early to rule out Sony and Microsoft, and too early to crown Nintendo the winner. Right now the 360 is ahead simply because it has a larger library of games, and because Xbox Live is the best online service/community of the three. However, what it will look like by this time next year is very difficult to predict.
