Documents dispaying size 0

Recently, when I finish a Word document it displays a size 0 i.e. 0 KB. When I save it to a memory stick, however, it shows its correct size. I have tried reinstalling Word (2003) but the fault returns. What is happening?

Does this always happen when you choose File > New from the Word menu?

Just a guess, maybe it doesn't give a file size until the file has a name?

    Thanks for the fast reply.

No, I'm creating new files by opening a "template" in the same folder and renaming it.
    The fault is intermittent.
If I save the "zero" size file to a memory stick, re-name it and paste it back to the original folder, all is OK

Perhaps it only gives a file size once the new document has been saved for the first time?

Does 'auto-save every xx minutes' creep in here somewhere?

What happens if you save it directly to the 'original' folder?

An auto-save failure message comes up, sometimes.
If the file is copied to the PC from the memory stick with the same name as the original, it is still size zero.

If the file's still in use (by Word?), it won't be overwritten.

Can you use Explorer to copy the file over? It may only be a refresh issue you are seeing.

(I knew there had to be more than one reason to hate Word)

    Re: Documents displaying size 0

    I've tried that as well.
I've now reinstalled Word 2003 and the fault is less serious but still intermittent. If I close Word before shutting down the computer at the end of the day, in Explorer I can see that the size 0 files are replaced by those of a proper size. This doesn't always happen so I'm still backing up to a memory stick but at least the programme is not as unreliable as before.
