    C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe IS still there.

For what it’s worth, when this notification appeared, simultaneously one of my personal user data files — a text file — opened in Internet Explorer, without me opening it. Ordinarily, when I click on a text file to open it, it opens in Notepad. I just mention this because it seems so odd.

Did you uninstall Microsoft OneDrive 17.3.7294.0108 recently? Only you know what the relationship is with "one of my personal user data files" and what you were doing at the time.

The last thing I did to “fiddle” with OneDrive was to terminate my 50GB OneDrive 50+ subscription, after setting up a new MS Office 365 subscription, which comes with 1TB of OneDrive space. And that was a couple weeks ago, and there hadn’t been a problem in those two weeks.

By “one of my personal user data files,” I just meant it wasn’t a system file. It’s just some text I had typed. And neither it nor the folder it’s in was open at the time. In fact, the browser (IE11) wasn’t even in use at the time.

What was I doing at the time? Actually, I wasn’t even using the computer. When I came back into the room to use it again, that WinPatrol notification was on the screen.

A bit of background: Bret Lowry lives in FL which suffered from severe flooding. His mother died in the flood and his staff is down to barebones because other members lost everything.
You might not get a reply from him because he has a lot on his plate.

This thread will explain some things

Just wondering if you ever recall choosing to view the document in IE 11? Or maybe what I am really wondering is if some unusual association was set using the "open with" dialog at some point.

For there to be a startup something had to create it, but I can't imagine what would set command prompt to open a random file in IE. o_O

If you get paranoid Autoruns is great for scouring the startups.

    Good luck...
