Does Geforce 4 Ti4200 64 MB card (from 2002) support DirectX 9?

Whenever I play Counterstrike, I get graphical errors.. it works, but graphics all messed up.

Also, my computer loves to randomly reboot.. I think my gfx card is messed up.

What drivers/directx do I need for this card?

I've got direct x9 and the latest drivers, but I think I might have to get older stuff to make it work properly..

    Thanks.

It's not your graphics card. It's Half Life. The game was published in 1998. It's old. Long before DirectX 9 (I think my GOTY edition came with DirectX 5), GeForce, or Windows XP. Half Life isn't even really a DirectX game. It was writen to use OpenGL. Half Life is probably the most popular legacy game out there.

As far as the random reboots, what does the machine do? Do you get a blue screen and an error message? Or is it just "welcome to BIOS show and POST!"? Does it only occur when you run Half Life?

The random reboots are just random.. no screen or anything, just reboots. I blame my broken RAM.

Anyways, so any ideas on how to fix the CS situation?

CPU overheating can cause random reboots. As for the graphics problems.. try different drivers. Check the guru3d.com forums/nvidia driver section and you might find something.

Do you have automatic restarts turned on?
Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> Startup and recovery (Settings ...) -> Make sure "Automatic restart" is turned off.

If you were getting BSODs when this was checked, it would restart before you could read it.

You got the latest reference drivers from nVidia? www.nvidia.com . Ive found that with that card the 46.x drivers worked best.

You got the latest patches for HL & CS?

    Tried re-installing the game?

I have the latest Nvidia drivers.. how do I get the older ones?

As for CS, yeah it's updated.. I just installed the other day.

Like, I'll be playing, and the colors get all funky.... corrupted looking.... after a while, I'll freeze.

Oh.. and I turned off the auto-restart. Thanks for the tip.

To answer your original topic question, no, the Ti4200 does not have the programmable shaders that are required for DX9 functions. It's a DirectX 8 card.

Not relevant to the current problem, but eventually you'll see DX9 programmable shaders listed in the minimum requirements for some game you're thinking of buying, and yours doesn't have them.

So I should find myself DirectX 8 somewhere.. Thanks.

I got another restart, but this time blue screen since I unchecked the option.. it said "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" .. that was the error, don't know what it means.

Ok, thats a step in the right direction. Do you have a code to go with? It should be in the format 0x00000000. Thats quite a common type of error, if memory serves me correctly its got somthing to do with memory or northbridge operation/overheating. But I'm not sure about that one though. If you get a code we can work on it from there. But I dont think its a purley software error.

Good advice to run the online virus scan, make sure there are no problems there. If the problem persists, then we'll need the code you've just found us.

Was gone for a while there.. Sorry, and Thanks for the replies thus far.

As for the code, no I don't have that.. didn't think to write it down, but I'll post it when I restart again.

As for the virus thing, I don't think I'd have one, since my computer was like this before and after I formatted.

All I can think of for the rebooting is the RAM.. gonna buy a new stick sooner or later.

As for the CS, I still have no idea how to fix it.

Ok, the "problem" was that the computer was rebooting randomly. I told him how to find out why it was rebooting. Now if he gets a code, you can use it to search and find out potentially what might be wrong. That isnt to save I've ruled out the fact there is a virus causing the problem. If you don't have a specfic error to troubleshoot, its like trying to find a house when you dont know what town its in! I also rather doubt the fact that its a virus by the fact that it happens only when using a specific application and you get graphic corruption before the stop error. It is possible, but unlikley. Thats not to say he shouldnt do a virus scan/registry scan anyway.

To me that sounds like a graphics card driver problem, of possibly overheating problem but the description doesn't sound like its giving artifacts.

And by guessing I'm not giving him a definitive answer, as I don't have the code I can't be sure, as "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" is a catagory not a specific error. Thats all I can do until I have a code.

    Have a look

But anyway I'm obviously not cut out for this so I'll take my BS somewhere else.

Sorry, can't get the code because I haven't crashed recently...

I'll run the virus scan ASAP and get back with the results.

And I don't think the CS problem is part of the rebooting problem, because I don't auto reboot after the CS graphical errors... I just freeze, so I have to reboot myself.

As for the system stats, it's...

    Geforce4 Ti4200 64 MB
    Windows XP Pro
    Asus A7V266-E/AA motherboard
    512 RAM
Athlon XP 2000+ CPU, runs at 1.3 gigs

And Goldfish, I appreciate you trying to help me.. I'll try and be more cooperative.

With the CS thing, I've noticed that alt-tabbing out and back in fixes the problem temporarily.. but it's a pain to do every minute.. Hmm.. wonder how I can fix this..

Don't worry GMXMan I wasn't directing that at you.

This is interesting. I remember from a while ago when I was regularly attending the net cafe down the road that with Windows 98 you would get crazy graphical corruption from time to time, which meant you had to exit the game and restart the machine. I'm not sure what the fix was, however. I'm pretty sure it was a game patch for CS specifically. Perhaps you should try re-installing CS (mod version, I presume...) to rule out data corruption.

I've reinstalled steam, still having problems...

Today, my computer started randomly rebooting over and over.. then it just stop turning on completely. Waited a while, got some non-starting BS, and now got it working again..

    No screen when it restarted...

Is it possible it's because my comp isn't getting enough power? My PSU is pretty old as far as I know.

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

Yes, it is quite possible. Can we have some full specs? There is a an online power calculator that can tell you whether your PSU is being overstrained, and older PSUs tend to give less consitant power, so that may well be the problem.

My system has a 450W power supply, and i have an ABIT nForce2 Ultra400, AN7, with AMD Athlon XP 3000+, 2 sticks of ram, 2 optical drives, a hard drive and the same graphics card as you.
