Does MG Tools give a false positive w/ some AV programs???

I ask this remembering I thought I saw somewhere it was mentioned that some AV programs don't like MGTools & will throw a false positive at you.

Well, upon my hubby's advice... I downloaded & ran HitManPro 3.5. (Which I downloaded from here on MG.)

Hubby said after a friend told him that HMP was a simple & fast way to scan files & would find more than Avast; MalewareBytes; & etc... he had found (on his desktop) several items to be removed.

However, when I ran it on my laptop... the only thing it found wrong with mine was MGTools is a possible Trojan. (& If you need to know the exact name it gave, I'll look it up.)

With that said... is it safe to assume that was a false positive?

& May I also assume that since you have the HMP available to download from your site, that is safe to use?

Would you recommend using it instead of or along with current AV (Avast) product??

Also, while on this subject of AV's to use... My hubby uses PC Tools along with Avast... & some other firewall type of program. (He said I shouldn't need a firewall.) However... he always is mentioning PC Tools... is this something I should have as well to help protect my computer? Or is it just a redundancy??

Oh... another question (& relation to my original one)... I thought I had uninstalled MGTools after I received an all clear from the latest submission. (A couple months ago.) Would there be a residual type of file that could be why HMP is saying it's a Trojan??

Ok, that's all the questions I have on this particular topic. I have another I need to tackle yet... but it needs to be in a different forum / topic.

    Thanks for the help, LH!

    Hi

MGTools can throw up a False positve in some security applications (Previx, poor thing that is springs to mind), but its the nature of the application itself and the security companies involved not actually being up front an as current with malware as they portray, as MGTools is and "inhouse" tool created by Chaslang a very well respected malware expert and Microsoft MVP, you can be assured its legit and ok to use.

Yes HMP rpo will be safe as its tested before adding to the lists, sadly some Antivirus/Malware definitions are not upto speed, its a hard task to get the security companies to get their act together, they just want to see a product based on hit rates over accurace, I noted this a few years back with Ad-aware a popular app, its counting cookies as BAD!!!! thats a false reading to inflate its hit rate for detection as cookies are not bad.

Alongside Avast (I assume you are using version 5.x of Avast)? is to use Spywareblaster, Windows own Defender (more so if Vista or Windows 7) and Malwarebytes (do update malwarebytes before you use it as it updates multiple times per day) and Superantispyware as backup malware scanners (dont get the paid versiosn just the free on demand versions, unless you like them, them show your thanks to the developers buy buying it).

Yes Avast and PCtools Firewall are a good combination.

MGTools comes in one folder only and doesnt install, the apps are standalone, so dont know on that, did the HMP app give you a location path as to the errant file?

Yes, using Avast 5.0.462 & yes to Vista (SP2) & I already have MalwareBytes.

I'll answer the rest when I'm not so tired. (Only got about 4 hours sleep last night.

Thanks for all the info you have provided me so far!
