I have a PIII 600 that is about 5 years old and it is running Windows 98 SE. Is there a way to tell if it is using, and im not sure if that's the correct term, USB protcol 1.1 or 2.0?

Open up device manager and look down the list for Universal Serial Bus Controllers open that up and if any of the devices say Enhanced then you will have USB2.0 if not then its USB1 or 1.1

Its a pretty safe bet that with a PIII thats 5yrs old you dont have USB2.0

OK, if I only have 1.1 or 1.0, can I change it, update it?? Or is it not worth the bother, generally??

Only way to change is to either upgrade your PC basically or get a USB2.0 PCI addin card.

Do you have any USB2.0 devices like Camera, Printer etc if not then just adding a USB2.0 card will not speed up the data transfer of USB1.0/1.1 devices.

To be honest I wouldnt bother, I would be more tempted to save the money and put it agains a new more upto date PC with USB2.0 built in on the Motherboard.

    Windows 98SE doesn't officially support USB 2.0.

Most hardware using USB 2.0 will work on 98, but they must supply their own drivers.

As stated above, unless you have something that really requires USB 2.0, I wouldn't bother. Even then it would be bottlenecked by your system as it's underpowered.
