Just bought new computer. Not dual core or anything but faster than my previous SLOW 900 mhz (yes, I know way outdated). Good thing is new computer ran faster. Until someone downloaded quicktime. Is this program really necessary? Does it bog down computer or do you think something else is the problem?

New custom built computer from very reputable guy and haven't installed anything other than office 2003 (and that darn quicktime).

    Computer Stats are:
AMD Sempron 3400+ Socket AM2 Processor
    1 ghz PC2-5300 DDR2 RAM
    Seagate 80 Gigabyte 7200 RPM SATA2 Hard Drive w/ 8 MB Cache
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition OEM w/ SP2
FX-629MBK Black/Silver MATX Case w/ 350 Watt UL Power Supply
Gigabyte GA-M61SME-S2 nVidia Geforce 6100 nforce 405 AM2 MicroATX PCIE Mainboard

    Thanks all,
    Laura

Where did the quicktime come from?

Is there any possibility that something less welcome came too?

Studio - no (just didn't want to throw mom under the bus LOL), mom installed it cause she said some programs need it to run properly. But new puter seem to be working ok before that download.

Steve - Thanks for the advice. I didn't realize there were alternatives so I will check those links out.

do either of you know whether this think will just uninstall properly, or will I have to find something to take it out?

Quicktime (and realplayer) uninstall normally from add/remove programs.

I didn't ask who installed QT. I asked where it came from. Some source sites may add other software (malware).

You will know if you still have problems after uninstalling.
