Does Startup CPL work with Vista?

Taking MajorGeeks advice, I downloaded Startup CPL to my Vista Home Premium, but it would not install. I saved the zip exe to a folder on the desktop but when I tried to install it, I got this error message: "Copy Error--Set up cannot copy the file Startup.cpl. Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert 'Startup Control Panel. Setup Disk #1 in the drive you specify'.” Then it says: "Copy files from: C\Users\Coan\AppData\Local\temp\$INFTool.Tmp." I'm lost. I have XP on a different computer and Startup CPL installed just fine there.

The author's link says no. http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

However the info below is quoted by the author:
I don't use Vista so I cannot verify if the above info is correct. Check it out though on your Vista machine if the option is there.

Very helpful. Thanks. I found the Vista program and it's just as the author said. I sure appreciate your quick and helpful reply.

This was confusing for me aswell. Quite a while ago.

I remember enquiring if this was Vista compatible? Even going to the extent and saying it was not compatiple. Even on MG download page it stops at Xp!?

Since no Admin, Mod or member pointed to a potential problem - I went ahead an recommened it for Vista too!!

    Hi

It works fine, although I do tend to use the portable non installer version but right click it and run as administrator when installing the installable version, or if you like ther layout of StartupCPL use the standalone version.

Only use it personally over Defenders Startup manager as when troubleshooting other PCs its mech easier and quicker to use with the variety of OSes I would come into contact with, so makes it when online assisting an easier suggestion over defender as many dont post what their OS is. If your perminently wishing to disable some startups, then Defender is good option, saves installing something else.

Plus with Defenders option and if you have multiple users you need to in Defender enable show for all users as the Disable button for many apps is grey'd out if you dont.

Oh and note if you run the installer version then its icon to run it is located in the Control Panel > Additional Options > Startup.

May though if needing to control Startups on a Vista PC, suggest an alternative application just for the troubleshooting of any issues arrising from possible starting apps, as my own preference is to delete unneeded startups completly.

So if one goofs up on a delete, I presume stumped and a repair install :)

PS - Did you mean delete using CPL or else!!

In the majority of cases startups are for items like Quicktime, JavaUpdater and various other updaters that just are not really needed, however they will reinstall themselves when you do update.

Trick is not to goof up, be doubley sure you know what your deleting, but yes in most cases re-installing the app adds the startup back, but if your not 100% comfortanble in doing this Managing Startups via Defender or StartupCPL is fine in just disabling them, msconfig is another ballgame as if your trying to slim your startups down your always adding one back and running the risk of having an app disabled in msconfig and later uninstalling said app then your going to have one stuck disabled (not too difficult to remove but not easy also).

Nope can use the Registry RUN Hives, StartupCPL, CCLeaner and various other applications to delete startups, choice is yours, I find it very easy to use CCleaner to delete startups and dont bother in the registry anymore.

This link says not to use CCleaner to delete or disable startups. :confused http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=149804

I'm using Spybot Search and Destroy for that function and just untick the box next to the program that I don't want to auto start.

Doesnt mention you cannot delete them with CCleaner, just not to manage (disable) them, which is not what I posted I use CCleaner for, I just find it easy application to delete them as I do not ever manage startups and only manage them in troubleshooting scenarios only on others PCs, as mentioned I delete ones I dont want as if I dont want them why manage them.

I will stand by my suggestion of if you dont want a Startup then deletion perminently with CCleaner is a valid choice as most users have CCleaner installed.

laptop I'm on now has only 2 Startups, Avast and Synaptics Touchpad app, the other 10 which other apps installed have been deleted although some like iTunes, Quicktime and Java etc will reinstall when udpated, they just get deleted again.

Thanks Halo for clearing up the misunderstanding. :) I really thought that "managing" startups meant either disabling or deleting and therefore stayed away from disabling in CCleaner (after I discovered the link I posted) although I do have CCleaner of course.

I'm just too chicken to delete startups in any software program, afraid that I can't get it back if needed. :-o :-D

PS: I disabled cftmon in CCleaner numerous times and it seems that it is Firefox's Sunbird calendar that needs it or Outlook Express.
