Er with any luck, the images below will show (otherwise I will give up).

As mentioned before, my shared files are stored on my Vista-powered DESKTOP PC hard wired to my Home Network.

My XP-Powered HP LAPTOP connects to my home network via a Linksys WAG160N WiFi-Router-Modem and it can access the share-able files on the Desktop.

My wife's XP-Powered Compaq 702 NETBOOK connects to my home network (or rather it should connect) via a Linksys WAG160N WiFi-Router-Modem and it CANNOT can access the share-able files on the Desktop. All machines share an Internet connection faultlessly. This is my only problem.

The Router staes that it has a starting IP address of 192.168.1.100 and a Gateway IP of 192.168.1.1

The only Firewall swicthed on is the Router's "SPI Firewall Protection - ON".

If anyone can read the attached IPCONFIG and Ping test results, I would appreciate any comments on what could be wrong that prevents the NETBOOK accessing the Desktop's shared files. I cannot understand how the LAPTOP can access the shared fiels on teh DESKTOP but the NETBOOK cannot.

I am not an exert on networks (er that is obvious, I am sure). Basically when I set up the system (over several years) I set up a SSID Network on the Router, all PCs then accessed the Internet fine, the I simply made all fiels on the Desktop shareable, putting them in "Public" and using the "Network Sharing Centre" in Vista. Vista has all the green blobs in the corrcet places on its Sharing Centre and no passwords are on any on the machines.

Any comments wodul be much appreciated.

Yes they work. Do you have the Windows firewall or the anti virus firewall turned off on all the systems?

If not, turn them all off and repeat the tests.

    Thanks jconstan,

All the firewalls are turned of all the PCs (I only had Windows firewalls on them) leaving just the router firewall turned off.

For Antivirus, I run AVG, Superantispyware, Hijack-this, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy all the time on all machines. Do you think these might be stopping sharing ?

    Thanks

    Hair loss continuing !

    Jim, thank you,

I turned off all my sceurity software then re-ran the tests - I am now getting good pings both ways (between the errant Netbook and the Desktop).

.. but (unlike the Laptop) the Netbook is still unable to access the shared files on the Desktop, despite the good news on "pinging".

This makes me wonder if I am going in the wrong direction. Somebody has suggested to me that sharing problems are more to do with issues within Windows and between XP and Vista rather than any ping/ ipconfig issues.

Yes, the sharing problems are more to do with issues within Windows. That's why I sent you the link on sharing. There is lots of stuff going on to share files between system...just do a search on this forum and you'll see lots of entries. A couple of tips: make sure all of your machines are members of the same WORKGROUP. It would be extremely helpful if the logon user ID on all machine were the same user AND the same password.

100% Success - but only when I hard wire connect, why ?

When I connect a Ethernet CAT5 from my Netbook to my Router-Modem I can share all shareable files on my Desktop (also connected to the Router-Modem via another Ethernet CAT5 cable). This is the "dog's nuts" (i.e. it is fantastic)

....but when I try and do the same via wi-fi, the Netbook cannot identify the Desktop nor can it share the Desktop's files.

Er does this give any clue how to fix my unresolved problem please ?

Well I'm glad you are having some success. When the laptop is connected via wi-fi, when you open Windows Explorer do you not see the HPDesktop system in your network neighborhood?

    Try this for a moment:

Go to START > RUN and type \\hpdesktop and hit OK. What do you get. Then go to START > RUN and type \\192.168.1.101 and hit OK. What do you get now?

What do you get now amazing, when I typed \\192.168.1.101 the Netbook came alive, suddendly all the shared directories and files suddenly appeared and the sharing works 100% as it should. Unbelievable, why has this happened ?> ***************

Well, as I tried to state in my first post, lots of things need to be right for this kind of sharing to work over TCP/IP. That's why you need to read all the articles on file sharing on home networks. Essentially, your laptop can not resolve the hpdesktop name to the correct IP address. It appears that you do not have NETBIOS over TCP/IP enabled on the network interface for the laptop.

Turn on NETBIOS over TCP/IP on the laptop and see how that works.

    Thank you and......

    Jim,

I am still getting rock solid 100% connections with everything sharing etc but only when I go via Start->Run-> \\IP address - fantastic.

I am trying to enable Netbios over TCIP and whilst I have selected / filled in the WINS Enable Netbios over TCIP "radio button", when I go back to ipconfig it still reports Disabled. I have seen other users raise this issue and I will be working on it over the next couple of days.

    Thank you
    Kevin
