Does this sound right to you?

Have been having constant problems with phone and internet. The cable co. has now said the problem is because I unplug my telephone modem[ I have always done this at night, along with everything else that is able to be unplugged]. They say the modem must be on 24/7, and the sudden problems are now blamed on this although I have been unplugging it for over a year. I am wondering what you all might think of this? {a tech ran tests on the phone modem half an hour before I was told this by someone else, and their tech said everything looked ok inside, including the modem!]
The cable company won't check their wires at the pole because they say that if that wire had a problem all the tvs would be out in the complex. [I am the only fool using their phone service, but we all use them for tv cause we are not allowed to use anything else.] It seems to me that if this explanation were correct, the phone would go out when the tvs do, and that is not the case, as tv goes out often and still have phone service. I would be grateful to know what you all think of their explanation.

If you're still on dial-up, the advice to leave the modem connected is erroneous, it should only be applicable to (A?)DSL.

Thanks. I am wanting to get dsl because of all the recent hassles. Still on dial-up. So if I got the basic adsl I couldn't unplug it at night or when I am out? Would that actually damage it? I unplug all but such things as fridge, washer, oven, ect, each night and before going out. I unplug computer when not in use.

If you don't mind less than optimal ADSL speeds, using a USB ADSL modem (which would turn off with your computer) or turning off the ADSL modem/router will cause no real problems to anything that I'm aware of.
