Does VLC have an output 'module' which I can snip or record some of the
    AVI file which is playing?

That's pretty simple. I suppose I could go on to ask, Well if not, then what
can I use to make a snippet of the video I am watching ?

    So I shall.
If not, then what can I use to make a snippet of the video I am watching ?

    Thanks
    Andre

There's a few free video editors available that will allow you to select a desired bit of video from a video file (avi, mpeg, whatever) and save it separately as its own little video.
    Virtual Dub http://www.majorgeeks.com/VirtualDub__d5523.html
    Kate's Video Cutter http://www.majorgeeks.com/Kates_Video_Cutter__d5680.html
    Free Video Dub http://www.majorgeeks.com/Free_Video_Dub__d5852.html
    AVIdemux http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avidemux__d5930.html
I have personally used the first two, and they work great. The other two, I haven't used; I found 'em by looking thru the multimedia section here at Major Geeks. Virtual Dub is not the most user friendly program around, but it has so many features and options, that it is almost good enough for professional work. If you get confused using it, don't worry. VDub has been around forever, it's very popular, and there's tons of how-to guides available all over the internet. If your AVI file has been encoded with a variable bit rate (or VBR), VDub may error out when you try to open the file. In that case, you'd need either Virtual Dub MP3Freeze, or Virtual DubMod. Both are free and widely available; just Google 'em (VDub MP3Freeze works great with VBR video files). Kate's Video Cutter is so easy to use that it's not even funny. If you just need a basic app to cut a section from a video and save it, this may be all you need. A bit light on serious features, but it should be fine for most home users.

Good luck! I hope this helps!

Thank you - Re: Does VLC ......

Thank you. A super quick reply and several suggestions. I appreciate that .

I will try the suggestions. What I really want to do is simply show a sample
    of a video to people.

Since VLC has been such a Godsend when nearly nothing else would work I
would like to know more about it.

I would for my own reasons still like to know if VLC will offer anything
If anyone knows please feel free to post a followup.

Other people find this thread via Google and your answer may help them too.

VirtualDubMod is simple but as dlb says not intuitive. It is just a free standing executable so no install required. Just unzip and go into folder and double click the EXE file to start.

Use the gold key buttons to move forward and back in the video.
Use the arrow keys to mark beginning(left arrow) and end(right arrow) of your clip.

So gold keys to find the best start frame and then mark it by pushing left arrow.
Gold keys to find a suitable end frame and then mark it by pushing right arrow.

Go to File>Save As then choose a name for the clip and at bottom of dialog box select "Direct Stream Copy" from the Video Mode drop down box instead of the default Full processing. *It is important to use DirectStreamCopy or you will end up with a huge file!*

A minute or two to process and you are done.

The reason you need VLC is probably because you are missing codecs. Some people don't like to install codec packs that have many extra codecs that they may never use but I always install K-Lite codec pack on my PC(I'm on XP). It is a simple way to eliminate problems playing various types of files in one easy step. Also it might be necessary for editing your video. VLC contains its own set of codecs that won't be available to an editing program and if your system can't play the file it probably won't be able to edit it.

Thanks again - Re: Does VLC have output 'module' whic

Thank you for adding to the thread.

Virtual Dub did not recognize the AVI file which is using Xvid or similar codec.

In the past with Win98SE I have used the codec packs with mixed results. Typically
they work OK. Sometimes you are involved with a lot of bits of things here
and there whch add to the slowdown and instability of the system. So when VLC
took care of 'everything' nearly I avoided codecs and used VLC.

The only exception , which I like, is testing a file with MSoft's Video player. If
the system has no codec then MS player will try to connect and download one.
I find this useful and wonder why more 3rd party suppliers don't use this method
with either their players or a stand alone system. For example Gspot could sell
a subscription which I would pay a few dollars to have available to me.

Anyway.. here's what I wanted to know about:

I dl Virtual Dub. The file , an Avi, is using Xvid codec. Virtual Dub doesn't
recognize it. This was using a setup where Virtual Dub intercepts the playing of
the file at the codec level.

I saw another choice which is using the screen capture. I then tried that.
Besides screen capture there is another offer in the same area on setup.
    Neither worked.

For you who know Virtual Dub well isit pretty simple to capture anything
on the screen? or example while I'm writing this could it be capped?

    I have a couple concerns:

Using a screen cap to GIF with Clipper , a nice screen capture software, I can
capture video in Youtube which is SWF or Flash. But I can't capture anything
    from VLC. I get BLACK.

I wonder how Virtual Dub does a screen capture of video from a player when
Clipper can't. Note: Clipper can capture the screen at preset intervals and
then create an animated GIF. This works, in my opinion, as well as a video
    for non photographic work.

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-

What is interesting: I opened the VDub file with a text editor.
I write a lot and within the allocated space of the AVI file is old text I've written.

I suppose when I allocated space whatever is on the HD is now in the AVI file
until something overwrites it. Since nothing wrote over it .. my text ..
and some binary stuff is in there.

Neat but not what I want.

Are there any 'real fast' ways to get up and running
    or do I need to

Read the Directions Stupid. Acronym ahh. RTDS

    Thanks

Hmmmm...never used VLC for anything of the sort myself, but I do know that it has streaming server components, so I don't think its unreasonable to expect some basic editing capabilities...

Might recommend a look through the VLC documentation.

Actually, on a quick tour of VLC's menus, I found this:

Maybe you can take a look at the preferences for any hints?

Re: Does VLC have output 'module' which I can snip or record some of the video I watc

Unless you install the necessary codec, system wide, any screen grab or editing utility is going to have a problem. I can't test any software for you because I have a codec pack installed that makes it impossible to duplicate problems.

Why not create a restore point and then install Klite Basic? It has minimal codecs but will include xvid. A very reliable and trouble-free codec pack in my experience.

If you choose this route then Image Grabber will give you a contact sheet of screengrabs. Or you can make a sample movie with VDubMod.

Good news , for some, I was able to easily make a video with VLC from
    a file playing within VLC.

There is no , of over 40 posts I read, post which says "you can't do that with VLC".

It's a true piece of art.

Anyway if there's an interest I'll post the method by which one can do this.

    No time right now.

    Andre

PS. The best method to modify VLC 's settings is to search google for it.
