Does Windows 7 automatically detect 32/64bit type of software when installing?

Hi

Yes it will do as if you have 64bit Windows 7 installed any application that is natively 64bit will go into the Program Files folder and any application that is 32bit will go into the Program Files (x86) folder as Windows 64bit versions be they XP, Vista or Win7 have 2 program files folders and 2 registries as well as multiple versions of specific apps for 64bit and 32bit.

If you have 32bit Windows 7 installed, then a 64bit native app will error and say "you dont have 64bit windows" or some such or just error and not install.

Not a vast amount of native 64bit apps around as yet, so if you have 64bit Windows 7 I wouldnt worry too much as most if not all current apps will work with 64bit Windows, its the other way around some native 64bit apps may not work with Win7 64bit, so just have to download the correct version of the app.

Latest thing which is great is that Office 2010 is native 64bit compatible and combined with Windows 7 64bit it zips along really well, os if an upgrade of Office is in the pipeline its a winner.

Just look when you are downloading apps if the maker has a 64bit version as it will work smoother than its 32bit counterpart on a Windows 64bit OS.
